Some news items you might have missed: • OUT: Olympic silver medalist Gus Kenworthy is dusting off the skis and heading for the slopes after announcing he’s coming out of retirement with an eye on the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics. • LGBTQ Nation: Plus-sized model Lauren Chan has made history as the first out lesbian model ever to grace the cover of the annual Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
She had no idea she was going to be its cover model — the news brought her to tears of joy.

• Washington Post: John Ewing Jr. was elected Omaha’s first Black mayor on Tuesday, defeating the city’s three-term Republican mayor, Jean Stothert — another warning sign for Republicans in a critical battleground area. • The Advocate: Pete Buttigieg, the former transportation secretary and 2020 presidential candidate, returned to Iowa Tuesday for a 75-minute town hall with VoteVets in Cedar Rapids. And while he hasn’t said if he will run for president in 2028, this appearance sure looks like it.

• AP News: Donald Trump’s new pick for surgeon general, Dr. Casey Means, wrote in a recent book that people should consider using psychedelic drugs as therapy and suggested her use of mushrooms helped her find a romantic partner. Means received her medical degrees from Stanford University, began a medical residency in Oregon, but never completed it. • Axios: Drug overdose deaths dropped in 2024 to their lowest annual level since 2019, according to preliminary CDC data. The drop in overdose deaths is partly due to the wider availability of naloxone (aka Narcan) which reverses an opioid overdose.
