Less than a year after returning to training, out Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy earned a spot in the men’s freestyle skiing halfpipe final at the 2026 Winter Olympics today in Milan.
The 34-year-old retired from the sport after the 2022 Beijing Games. But today he showed he can still throw down with the best.
In the final, each athlete got three runs to score the single-highest mark they can earn.
In his second run in the final, Kenworthy scored 84.75 moving him into first place. Ultimately, other skiers passed him with their final runs with American Alex Ferreira taking home the gold.
Kenworthy finished in sixth place, notching an impressive finale at his fourth Olympic Games. You can watch the men’s freeski halfpipe finals on NBC here.
Kenworthy represented the U.S. in 2014 at the Sochi Winter Olympics, where he took home a silver medal. In October 2015, Kenworthy publicly came out as gay in an interview with ESPN.
He returned to the Winter Games for Team USA in 2018. Following the 2022 Olympics, where he represented Team Great Britain, he announced his retirement.
The only gay man to compete as an out and proud gay man at three Winter Olympics, he’s also the only out athlete to compete for two different countries: Team USA in 2018, and Team Great Britain in 2022 and now in 2026.
