As bad news after bad news keeps piling up for Donald Trump’s Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, who’s been accused of sexual assault and public drunkeness, several outlets are reporting Trump is now considering dropping Hegseth for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to head up the Pentagon.
President-elect Trump’s support for his choice of defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, is said to be wobbling, with Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida under consideration for the role.

But that may come with some horse trading. DeSantis is already tasked with choosing a replacement for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who Trump has picked to be Secretary of State. And Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has made it known she would like that senate seat. Perhaps DeSantis gets the Defense Secretary gig if Lara gets her senate seat…? In related news, Penelope Hegseth, Hegseth’s mother, addressed her 2018 email to her son accusing him of routinely abusing women and lacking character. Ms. Hegseth told Fox News today that her son was “not the same man” he was in 2018, adding that “Pete is a new person – he’s redeemed, forgiven, changed.” I think most mothers would recant years-old criticism of their sons if it meant winning or losing an important position.
Pete Hegseth is in peril in the Senate.
At least six Republican senators, perhaps more, are not currently comfortable supporting Hegseth, following the allegations concerning drinking and his treatment of women.
