Friendship Takes Centerstage In New Netflix Doc ‘Will & Harper’

In the new documentary Will & Harper, Will Ferrell and his close friend Harper Steele (former head writer at SNL)  embark on a cross-country road trip together after Harper comes out as a trans woman. “Where you a little worried about how to talk to me when I came out to you?,” Harper asks Will in the film. His honest response – “Yeah, probably a little nervous.” The film has a deeply human feel. And at a time when transgender stories often get defined by headlines, Will & Harper is a funny, moving journey of discovery.

In a recent interview with The Independent, Will Ferrell was asked why he thinks transphobia exists. Ferrell replied, “I think we fear what we don’t know. There is hatred out there. It’s very real and it’s very unsafe for trans people in certain situations.” “I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. I don’t know why Harper is threatening to me. It’s so strange to me, because Harper is finally… *her*. She’s finally who she was always meant to be.” “Whether or not you can ultimately wrap your head around that, why would you care if somebody’s happy? Why is that threatening to you? If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.” The critics have raved about the film:

“A genuinely moving tribute to friendship” – Rolling Stone

“An endeavor that could change and even save lives” – The Daily Beast

“Poignant and laugh-out-loud funny” – IndieWire

Watch Will & Harper beginning September 27 on Netflix.
