Employment Report: U.S. Lost 32,000 Jobs In September

There won’t be a September jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics today thanks to the shutdown of the federal government.

But we do have the ADP National Employment Report, which shows the U.S. lost 32,000 private sector jobs in September. Experts had predicted a gain of about 50,000 jobs.

ADP also revised August’s employment growth of 54,000 to an actual loss of -3,000.

The ADP National Employment Report is an independent measure of the labor market based on the anonymized weekly payroll data of more than 26 million private-sector employees in the United States.

This month’s report indicates annual pay is up 4.5% year over year.

“Despite the strong economic growth we saw in the second quarter, this month’s release further validates what we’ve been seeing in the labor market, that U.S. employers have been cautious with hiring,” said Dr. Nela Richardson, chief economist for ADP.

A weekly report on the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits — often viewed as an indicator for layoffs — has also been postponed.

Even Fox News can’t put a positive spin on the news.
