Democrats Will Nominate Biden In Virtual Session To Ensure He’s On Ohio Ballot

The Democratic National Committee will hold a virtual session to nominate President Biden, thwarting Ohio Republicans’ attempt to keep him off the ballot. In April, Ohio’s Secretary of State Frank LaRose informed the Democratic National Committee that the certification deadline to get President Joe Biden on the state’s 2024 presidential ballot is 12 days before the Democratic National Convention, where Biden would officially be chosen as the Democratic nominee. In 2010, Ohio lawmakers passed legislation that requires certification of a candidate 90 days before the general election. Today, the DNC announced it will hold a virtual roll call before Ohio’s August 7 deadline, sidestepping the partisan play by Ohio Republicans, who could have simply moved the deadline, which they’ve done in the past.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

A DNC committee will meet next week to greenlight virtual proceedings, and all members will vote on the change sometime after that. Democrats have not yet set a date for the roll call, which they also held virtually in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alabama and Washington faced the same problem and resolved it. The Alabama Legislature voted to change the deadline, while Washington’s secretary of state agreed to provisionally certify Biden. Democrats also sought provisional certification in Ohio, but state officials struck down that idea.

Also this from Ohio Capital Journal:

The 90-day deadline has often caused trouble since its adoption in 2010. Only in 2016 did both parties’ conventions take place before the Ohio cutoff date. Both conventions took place after the deadline in 2012 and 2020, and legislators extended the deadline both times.

DNC chair Jaime Harrison said in a statement:

“Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio, and all 50 states and Ohio Republicans agree. But when the time has come for action, they have failed to act every time, so Democrats will land this plane on our own.”

“Through a virtual roll call, we will ensure that Republicans can’t chip away at our democracy through incompetence or partisan tricks and that Ohioans can exercise their right to vote for the presidential candidate of their choice.”
