Democratic Senators Call For Menendez To Resign

At this writing, there are now 16 Democratic Senators calling for recently indicted Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to resign, including fellow New Jersey Democrat Senator Cory Booker. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1706691426363257246 From the New York Times:

As New Jersey’s junior senator, Mr. Booker often has described Mr. Menendez, the senior senator, as a friend, ally, and mentor. His decision to condemn Mr. Menendez, and to join the growing chorus of state and federal officials calling on him to step down, demonstrates the deepening crisis facing a senator who, until last week, had occupied one of the most powerful and secure positions in American politics.

“The details of the allegations against Senator Menendez are of such a nature that the faith and trust of New Jerseyans as well as those he must work with in order to be effective have been shaken to the core,” Mr. Booker said, adding: “I believe stepping down is best for those Senator Menendez has spent his life serving.”

Mr. Menendez was charged on Friday with using his power as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee to assist the government of Egypt and businessmen in New Jersey in exchange for bribes that included bars of gold bullion, a Mercedes-Benz convertible, exercise machines, and more than $500,000 in cash.

Menendez says he has no intention of resigning and denies all the allegations against him. He said in a statement yesterday that the envelopes of cash found at his home were an old habit of withdrawing cash from his savings accounts to keep at home, a tendency he said was rooted in his parents’ experience in Cuba. But prosecutors say some of the envelopes containing the cash had the fingerprints of a businessman charged in the scheme. The senator didn’t explain how he came into possession of the gold bars or Mercedes Benz. This is his second indictment on corruption charges as he stood trial in 2017 accused of taking bribes from a wealthy doctor. Menendez says once the judicial process is concluded, he will “not only will I be exonerated, I will still be New Jersey’s senior senator.” New Jersey’s governor, Philip D. Murphy, has also called on Menendez to resign.
