Convicted Felon Donald Trump Formally Sentenced

Donald Trump was officially sentenced this morning after being convicted last May of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with his hush money payments to Stormy Daniels in 2016. Trump’s sentence, an unconditional discharge which attaches no fine, probation or jail time, at least formalizes his status as a felon.

From the New York Times:

Mr. Trump appeared virtually, his scowl projected onto a screen in a chilly and bright Lower Manhattan courtroom filled with reporters, sketch artists and the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg.

The president-elect was at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, seated along with one of his lawyers in front of a pair of large American flags.

“This has been a very terrible experience,” Mr. Trump said during the hearing, adding: “The fact is, I’m totally innocent.”

Now that Mr. Trump has been sentenced, he can begin a formal appeal of his conviction. He cannot, however, pardon himself. Presidential pardon authority does not extend to state charges.

Trump had faced up to four years in prison. But his election win made prison time a constitutional impossibility. Trump’s last ditch effort to avoid the sentencing hearing died last night when 5 members of the Supreme Court denied his request to intervene.
