North Carolina Gov. McCrory Angry 4th Circuit Appeals Court Denies Rehearing

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory issued this angry statement in response to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals denial to rehear a case regarding transgender rights decided in April.

“School systems throughout our nation should be allowed to make sensible accommodations for students whose gender identity conflicts with their own physical anatomy. Yet the extreme Obama courts and administration deny this common sense flexibility at the expense of privacy for millions of boys and girls in our schools’ restrooms, locker room and shower facilities.

“It’s unfortunate that our attorney general Roy Cooper didn’t join us to pretect the expectation of privacy for our children.

“As Judge Niemeyer notes in his opinion, ‘…they can override these provisions by redefining sex to mean how any given person identifies himself or her self at any given time, thereby, of necessity, denying all affected persons the dignity and freedom of bodily privacy.’

“He went on to say, and I agree, ‘…the momentous nature of this issue deserves an open road to the Supreme Court to seek the Court’s controlling construction of Title IX for national application.’

“Alternatively, the U.S. Congress could take action to clarify the scope of federal anti-discrimination laws so there is consistent application across our country.”

The original case was brought by a transgender student, Gavin Grimm, against the Gloucester County School Board in Virginia, which enacted a policy restricting students to restrooms aligned with their “biological gender.,” and not their gender identity.

Grimm said in a statement, “Now that the Fourth Circuit’s decision is final, I hope my school board will finally do the right thing and let me go back to using the boys’ restroom. Transgender kids should not have to sue their own school boards just for the ability to use the same restrooms as everyone else.”

Because the ruling was issued by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, and North Carolina is subject to rulings of the 4th, North Carolina may well see it’s hateful HB2 go down.

I fully expect this case to head to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker Will Sign Transgender Protections Bill Into Law

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker

After months of mixed signals, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker has announced he will sign into law recent legislation that provides for public accommodations for transgender folks.

From the Boston Globe:

“We’ve certainly listened to a variety of points of view from many sides and have said, from the beginning, that we don’t want people to be discriminated against,” Baker said in an interview with The Boston Globe. “If the House bill were to pass in its current form, yeah, I would sign it.”

The bill approved by the Senate and the version that is set to be passed by the House on Wednesday would allow people to use the restrooms and locker rooms that match their gender identity and would protect transgender people from discrimination in barber shops, malls, libraries, restaurants, and other public accommodations.

The bathroom provision has raised sharp concern from opponents who assert that male sexual predators, under the guise of being transgender women, could enter women’s restrooms and locker rooms. Proponents of the bill say those worries are unfounded and not borne out by the almost 20 states that already have similar protections.

Baker was booed at an LGBT event in April when he wouldn’t endorse the legislation.

Transgender rights and protections have jumped to the forefront of our national discourse in the past year, with many states passing anti-transgender laws like North Carolina’s HB2 which dictates to transgender students they must use bathrooms that align with their gender assigned at birth as opposed to their actual gender identity.

Bette & Carol: The Original “Dolly” Meets Broadway’s Newest “Dolly”

Broadway World has the details on the meeting of two icons:

Broadway’s newest Dolly Gallagher Levi met the classic original last week, as the fabulous Bette Midler was introduced to the legendary Carol Channing.

Channing, who is now 95, took Broadway by storm and got a Tony Award, too, when she opened in the original 1964 production of Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart’s HELLO, DOLLY!, a musical version of Thornton Wilder’s THE MATCHMAKER.

Bette Midler stars in the upcoming Broadway revival, which begins previewing March 15, 2017, with an official opening night of April 20, 2017. Four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks directs and Tony Award winner David Hyde Pierce joins Midler as leading man Horace Vandergelder.

The Fallout From Trump’s “Veterans’ Charities” Press Conference

Steve Benen, writing for MSNBC’s “Maddow Blog,” sums up the bits and pieces of Donald Trump’s poorly handled press conference yesterday regarding the dispersal of funds to veterans’ charities:

So where does that leave us? Trump said he’d raised $6 million for veterans, but that wasn’t true. He later claimed he never used the $6 million figure, but that wasn’t true. His campaign insisted Trump had contributed $1 million himself, but that wasn’t true. Trump said he “didn’t want to have credit” for the fundraising efforts, but that wasn’t true. He said he and his team were vetting groups they’d never heard of four months after the fact, but that wasn’t true.

And as of yesterday, all of this, the Republican candidate insisted, is the media’s fault. Indeed, Trump thinks journalists should be “ashamed” of themselves for scrutinizing his claims that turned out to be wrong.

Not to put too fine a point on this, but in a normal year, in a normal party, with a normal candidate, this is the sort of controversy that could end a campaign. Legitimate presidential hopefuls can get away with some dissembling and the occasional whopper, but Trump was caught telling obvious falsehoods about support for veterans’ charities.

If this happened to Hillary Clinton, is there any doubt it would be the #1 issue in the presidential race between now and Election Day? That every pundit in America would use this as Exhibit A in their takes on why Americans just can’t trust the Democrat?

Canoeing Champ Matt Lister Covers Attitude Magazine

Canoeing champ Matt Lister is one of two cover men for Attitude Magazine’s June issue, along with transgender American model Laith Ashley.

Lister tells Attitude that the coming out process was a little complicated for him:

“I didn’t want to come out while I was in school because I was already bullied for being a fat, spotty kid and I was bigger than everyone and I was hairy. I may as well have just worn a target. I didn’t want to add another thing to that pile, so I just waited till the last year of school, when I was in the sixth form.”

“I would never shame someone for not coming out because it’s a personal choice and it’s a difficult thing to go through, but I feel as if it’s a necessity for the LGBT community because you’re in the public eye”, Matt says.

“People are watching you, even people who aren’t involved in sport that maybe want to get into it, but they don’t try because they think it doesn’t fit them.”

You can watch a bit of the ‘behind the scenes’ action at Matt’s photo shoot below:
