Germany’s Upper House Approves Marriage Equality Bill, Now Heads To German President’s Desk

Germany’s marriage equality bill sailed through the upper House of Parliament with no challenges, and now heads to the desk of the German President.

From Pink News:

Equal marriage passed through the lower house in the German Parliament last week, after Chancellor Angela Merkel caved in to demands from opposition parties.

The country’s right-wing Chancellor, who has blocked equal marriage for more than a decade, reversed her long-standing policy to allowed her own MPs to vote with their conscience on the issue.

Though Merkel still cast her own vote against the law, it gathered enough support to pass through the Bundestag (lower house) by a vote of 393-296.

Today, the legislation also cleared the Bundesrat (upper house).

Unlike the Bundestag, where Chancellor Merkel’s Grand Coalition holds control, the Bundesrat is controlled by the 16 state governments, with a left-wing majority.

The law effectively passed through the house unanimously, as no state challenged the bill and no vote was called.

The Bundesrat has passed several motions on same-sex marriage before, leading to much of the political pressure on Merkel in the lower house that sparked her climbdown.

A coalition of the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Left previously submitted a bill to the Bundesrat that would recognise marriages between same-sex couples, which was the basis for the legislation in the Bundestag.

The law will now head to the desk of the country’s President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Upon becoming law, Germany would join 13 other European nations that current celebrate marriage equality – Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Chechnya Resumes Rounding Up/Torture Of Gay Men

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov

Buzzfeed News is reporting that the rounding up and torture of gay men in Chechnya has resumed according to LGBT activist group, Russia LGBT Network.

The independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta first reported that around 100 people had been kidnapped in the crackdown in April, but Russian activists reported that sources in the region said the detentions had stopped following an international outcry.

Igor Kochetkov of the Russia LGBT Network, which is working to evacuate people targeted in the purge from the region, now tells BuzzFeed News the organization has gotten around 10 calls reporting new detentions since Ramadan ended on June 24.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has not only denied that the torture has taken place, he says that gays don’t even exist in his country.

No word as to whether or not President Trump brought up the issue to Russian President Putin during their meeting today at the G20 summit.

The White House has not addressed the issue since the first reports began in April.

Secretary Of State Says Trump Raised Issue Of Russian Interference In 2016 During Putin Meeting

Several sources are reporting that President Trump did bring up the subject of cyber-hacking by Russia during the 2016 campaign to Russian President Putin.

Secretary of State Tillerson says the two leaders had “lengthy discussion” on Russian interference in US election.

Putin reportedly denied such involvement. Again.

No reports yet on whether Trump thanked the Russian president.

The New York Times‘ Moscow bureau chief is reporting that Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is telling Russian press that Trump “accepted” Putin’s statement on interference.

New Poll: 37 Nations Give Trump Much Lower Ratings Than Obama

Trump told Americans that “the world will respect us again” when he was running for president.

But according to a new Pew Research Center Poll, it’s exactly the opposite – 37 nations gave President Obama much higher ratings on the world stage than Trump does today.

Check the numbers above.

The only two countries where Trump looked good was – surprise! – Israel and Russia.

Trump Confuses Podesta Email Leak With DNC Server Hack

According to Donald Trump, EVERYONE at the G20 summit meeting is talking about why “John Podesta refused to give the DNC server to the FBI and the CIA” during the 2016 election.

Only problem: John Podesta didn’t work for the DNC, so he couldn’t give the FBI or CIA their email server.

Trump is clearly conflating the hacking of the DNC’s server with the release of Podesta’s emails while he was Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman.

It’s doubtful any of the G20 leaders even know who Podesta is.

Except, well, Putin. For obvious reasons.

Final thought: THIS is where Trump’s head is just before he’s to walk into a meeting with the president of Russia? #smh

John Podesta clapped back:

And then the Twitterverse chimed in:

When Vladimir Met Donald

That highly anticipated “first meeting” (wink, wink) between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place today.

As you may recall, Trump has given conflicting answers in the past as to whether or not he has met or have any relationship with Putin.

At a low-key meeting at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, Trump said, “Putin and I have been discussing various things, and I think it’s going very well.”

Via translator, Putin acknowledged that while the two leaders had previously spoken by phone, “I am delighted to meet you personally,” Putin said.

I wish Trump would develop better posture.

Putin looks “delighted” to be there, doesn’t he?

And by the way…

Trump Offers Putin A Two-Hander At Initial Meeting

The world was watching for the first ever meeting of President Puppet Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and it happened this morning at the G20 summit.

Before their scheduled afternoon meeting, a journalist happened to catch this moment when Trump leaned in with a two-hander to greet Putin for the first (27th?) time.

He also gave Putin a friendly slap on the back.

No report on whether “beautiful chocolate cake” was offered.
