GOP Rep. Chris Collins On Trump Tweets: “He’s Just A Fun Guy”

Appearing on CNN this morning, GOP Rep. Chris Collins defended Donald Trump’s over the top tweets and retweets including the infamous “golf ball hitting Hillary Clinton” meme.

“The president does have a sense of humor,” said Collins. “He’s just a fun guy.”

Uh huh. That’s it. Fun.

I call it “not befitting the office of the presidency.”

Sean Spicer’s Big Night At The Emmy Awards

At last night’s Emmy Awards, folks were flabbergasted when former White House press secretary Sean Spicer rolled out onstage via podium during the opening sequence to announce, “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period — both in person and around the world.”

At first, you saw people in the audience try to figure out, “Is that really Sean Spicer?”

And then, folks thought it was funny that the producers were able to get the gag to happen.

But right after that you kind of realized that this was the “normalization” of Sean Spicer. The guy who stood at the White House press room podium and lied to the American public over and over again.

And it didn’t feel very good.

From Aaron Blake at the Washington Post:

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer got a turn on one of Hollywood’s glitziest stages Sunday night. And he used it to laugh about the falsehoods he told the American people in an attempt to rehabilitate his image.

I’m all for a good laugh. And I’ll add up front that there are political issues on which people have extremely strong feelings and unfortunately can’t see the other side — we all have blind spots and should be mindful of that. But inherent in Spicer’s appearance Sunday night was an acknowledgment that he sold the American people a bill of goods from the White House lectern. He essentially admitted to blatantly misrepresenting President Trump’s inauguration crowd size, and he and those assembled all had a good laugh at it.

CBS Sunday Morning: Madonna’s Song Of Hope For Malawi’s Children

CBS’ Sunday Morning does well by Madonna in this spotlight on the newly opened hospital in Malawi she’s spent years helping to build.

It was the first time she’d seen the finished building. “Oh my gosh, what a beautiful hospital!” said Madonna. “It’s the brightest, most cheerful hospital entrance I’ve ever seen.”

The Mercy James Pediatric Surgery Center (named for her adopted daughter) has new operating rooms and a children’s ICU.

“Pretty amazing,” she said. “Yeah, it’s gorgeous. It’s kind of awesome. I mean, if you’re gonna get sick, come here.”

And there are few other options: hospital beds in Malawi are scarce, and children often have to compete with adults for thinsg like intensive care.

Madonna didn’t know much about Malawi when she made her first trip there in 2006. “I did have to look it up on a map, I’m not gonna lie,” she said. “This is a very small country, bordered by Mozambique and Zambia. And it was the best trip I ever made.”

“Why?” Smith asked.

“Because it changed my life.

At one point, Madge explains that she was inspired in part to build the hospital by the shoddy treatment she witnessed gay men experience during the height of the AIDS epidemic in New York City.

Serbia’s First Openly Lesbian Prime Minister Marches In Belgrade Pride Parade

Serbia’s first openly gay prime minister, Ana Brnabic, marched in Belgrade’s Pride parade for the first time saying her presence demonstrates the government’s respect for all of its citizens.

Via Deutsche Welle:

“My message here today is that the government respects all citizens,” Brnabic told reporters. “We want to send a signal that diversity makes our society stronger.”

Carrying rainbow flags, balloons and a banner reading, “For change,” pride participants walked through the capital, Belgrade.

“Today we walk together and together we will stress that problems still exist and that we want to work together to solve them,” said activist Goran Miletic.

Riot police cordoned off the city center with metal fences as helicopters flew overhead to prevent possible clashes with extremist groups opposed to the pride gathering. Opponents gathered with their own banners but no incidents were reported.

Serbia has recently tried to improve its image with an eye towards European Union membership. Gay activists in Serbia hailed Brnabic’s appointment in June 2017 as an important step in their struggle for gay rights, but say much more still needs to be done.

Trump Retweets GIF Of Him Hitting Hillary With Golf Ball

Donald Trump went on another of his infamous Twitter screeds Sunday morning including retweeting a gif spliced together that appeared to show him hitting Hillary Clinton in the back with a golf ball.

The original tweeter is a user whose handle is @Fuctupmind and his bio is full of pro-Trump and anti-Hillary hashtags.

“Donald Trump’s amazing golf swing #CrookedHillary,” the user wrote in the caption.

Trump’s retweet sent the Twitterverse into overdrive. Clearly, the retweet was red meat for his base, and the classlessness of the move infuriated his detractors.

The former director of the independent Office of Government Ethics, Walter Shaub Jr., who resigned in July after clashes with the president tweeted, “The man is unfit.”

Trump also took time to mock North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, as “Rocketman:”

Plus a few retweets of memes that were flattering to him in an effort to stroke his ego:

Just another crazy morning in Trump Town.

Beautiful City

I had an interesting “conversation” on Facebook today.

I had shared a link to a story about an asshole volunteer firefighter in Franklin Township, Ohio, who posted on his Facebook that if he had to choose between saving a dog or a black man from a burning building, the dog would get priority, because “one dog is more important than a million n****rs.”

You get the point of sharing the article, right? He’s an asshole, and nothing disinfects better than a little sunshine.

But someone I’ve never met took umbrage with me posting the link in my Randy Report Facebook page.

This guy, Justin MacDonald, had a problem with me sharing the story of this racist guy. He wrote,

“Why tf is this even a fucking news article? Other then to spread more hate?”

“So let’s blast one firefighter from where? Iscrewmysister Idaho? We acknowledge that these people are out there. Deal with it locally not world news. Trying to muster up hate against all firefighters is what this is .. IMO”

“What’s your opinion? To search out each and every person who says something. Welcome to Earth don’t know about your retirement fund but you’ll never run out of work. Glad I don’t have to follow”

For full disclosure, I’ll post the full back and forth below.

But this exchange did get me to thinking: is it really my job to “search out each and every person” who says or does icky/hideous things?

I don’t know about that. I do know nothing gets better unless folks raise their voices. Even if it’s one voice (which, in this case, it’s not).

In the same week where we lost a huge civil rights hero, Edie Windsor, who brought down the Defense of Marriage Act by taking her case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, I’m reminded one voice can make a difference.

Edie Windsor’s life story was a lesson in how the simple act of two people falling in love can change the world.

Now, I don’t begin to equate myself with the amazing Edie. But I’m certain she would denounce this firefighter in Ohio for his divisive language.

And I have no illusions about what I can (or can’t) accomplish by making sure people know that idiots like this guy in Ohio exist. But you can’t fix a problem if folks don’t know it exists.

But, I was reminded of this song from a few years back. Hunter Parrish, who most know from the series Weeds, starred in the Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz’s Godspell as “Jesus.”

In the revival, they added a song for Hunter that Schwartz had written for the movie of the musical back in the ’70s called “Beautiful City.”

The lyrics came to mind, and I’ll let you do the math.

We may not reach the ending
But we can start
Slowly but truly mending
Brick by brick
Heart by heart
Now, maybe now we start learning how
We can build a beautiful city
Yes we can, yes we can
We can build a beautiful city
Not a city of angels, but finally a city of man

Am I wasting my time pointing out jerks and assholes? It’s true I probably won’t “run out of work.”

Maybe I’m naive. But I’ll be happy and naive thinking I’m doing “something.”

Something that maybe gets us closer to, if not a “city of angels,” perhaps a city of real men.

Hey, Justin MacDonald – I hope you find a passion that inspires you to make a difference. Even if it does run out your retirement fund.

Happy Saturday, y’all.

California Legislature Passes Bill Requiring Presidential Candidates To Release Tax Returns

If other states follow suit, this could throw a wrench in Donald Trump’s bid for reelection.

The California State Assembly has passed the Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act, by a vote of 42-18, requiring all presidential candidates to release 5 years of tax returns in order to be on the ballot.

The tax returns would be made available to the public on the California Secretary of State’s website.

The bill now heads to the state Senate before landing on the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

As we all know, Donald Trump became the first presidential candidates since the 1970s to not release his tax returns.

Although he told the American people over and over again that he couldn’t because he was “under audit,” the IRS has said audits do not prevent people from making their tax information public.

Can you imagine if he tries to say his taxes are still “under audit” in three years?

New Study Shows Young Guys Find Bald Men More Attractive, Confident

(via Instagram)

Guys futzing about with Propecia and Rogaine might want to reach for a razor instead.

Via Queerty:

A new study by the University of Pennsylvania has found that guys–especially younger guys–not only find bald guys more attractive, they also find them more dominant and more confident than guys with hair.

The study, titled Shorn Scalps And Male Dominance, was led by Albert E. Mannes. Students were asked to rate photos of different men with different hairlines according to attractiveness, confidence and dominance. Researchers even got sneaky with it. Some of photos showed the same man but with his hair digitally removed.

And the bald men won out in all three categories.

Ranked by attractiveness, bald men were found to be the most sexy, followed by men with thick hair, and then men with thinning hair.

Of all the men, guys with shaved heads seemed to be the most appealing.

Interestingly, on average, guys with shaved heads were also viewed as nearly an inch taller than guys with hair, four years older, and 13% stronger. They were also believed to do better in business and economically overall.
