Timothée Chalamet stars in the upcoming Oscar contender, ‘Beautiful Boy’

Fresh off his spectacular Oscar-nominated turn in the acclaimed gay-centric film, Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars with fellow Academy Award nominees Steve Carell and Amy Ryan in Beautiful Boy, due to hit theaters October 12.

The film is based on a pair of best-selling memoirs by father and son David and Nic Sheff.

The official logline reads, “Based on the best-selling pair of memoirs from father and son & David and Nic Sheff, Beautiful Boy chronicles the heartbreaking and inspiring experience of survival, relapse, and recovery in a family coping with addiction over many years.”

The trailer begins with a fairly extended scene between father and son, an unusual move for an initial promo but puts the talent and chemistry of Chalamet and Carell front and center. Both are here, and both are bringing it.

From the Academy Award winning producers of 12 Years A Slave and Moonlight, the film also features Golden Globe winner Maura Tierney.

Considering the depth of talent involved with the film, Oscar prognosticators already have the movie on their radar.

Democrat Jared Polis Could Become 1st Openly Gay Man Elected To Governor

Last night, Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado came one step closer to becoming the first openly gay man to be elected governor in the United States.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jared Polis

Last night, Rep. Jared Polis of Colorado came one step closer to becoming the first openly gay man to be elected governor in the United States.

Shortly after the polls closed, the Boulder native was declared the winner of the Democratic nomination for governor of Colorado with 44.7% of the vote. His nearest competitor, Cary Kennedy, garnered only 24.7% of the vote.

Come November, Polis will take on current Colorado State Treasurer Walker Stapleton in the governor’s race. Current Gov. John Hickenlooper – who is term-limited.

A recent poll shows Polis leading Stapleton, a second cousin of George W. Bush and vocal supporter of Donald Trump, by 5 points.

One of the wealthiest members of Congress, Polis is said to be worth upwards of $400 million. In his 20s, he helped turn his family’s Blue Mountain Arts greeting card business into an e-card retailer eventually selling the business for $780 million.

Elected in 2008, Polis is one of seven openly gay members of the 113th Congress and caucuses with the LGBT Equality Caucus. He campaigned for governor on a platform of universal healthcare, free pre-K education and robust renewable energy.

Polis has a long-term partner, Marlon Reis. In 2011, Polis became the first openly gay parent in Congress when they welcomed a son, Caspian. They also have a daughter, Cora.

While former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey came out as gay during his time in office, Polis would be the first openly gay man to be elected to a governor’s mansion.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown became the first openly bisexual governor when she took office in 2015.

GOP Strategist Steve Schmidt: “American People By A Fluke Elected An Imbecilic Former Reality TV Show Host”

Former GOP strategist and John McCain presidential campaign manager appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe today:

“So in the 240th year of the independence of the United States, in three states by 78,000 votes, the American people by a fluke elected an imbecilic former reality TV show host and con man whose only affinity for reading anything were the Adolf Hitler speeches he kept on his night stand.”

Seems pretty much on point to me…

Walgreens Pharmacist Refuses Medication For Woman With Unviable Pregnancy

A first grade teacher in Arizona was denied necessary medication needed to end an unviable pregnancy
Nicole Arteaga

Nicole Arteaga, a first-grade teacher in Arizona, recently got the sad news that her nine week-old pregnancy had stopped developing.

With no heartbeat, the pregnancy would end in a miscarriage.

Instead of going through a surgical procedure to remove the fetal tissue, Arteaga opted to use a medication to provide what would basically be a medical abortion.

The FDA has approved misoprostol to end a pregnancy within the first ten weeks.

But when she went to pick up the prescription at her local Walgreens, the pharmacist inquired as to whether she was pregnant. When she shared that she was, the pharmacist refused to fill the prescription based on “his ethical beliefs.”

Arteaga shared her experience with the Walgreens pharmacist on Facebook and the post has gone viral having been shared almost 40,000 times.

I stood at the mercy of this pharmacist explaining my situation in front of my 7 year old, and five customers standing behind only to be denied because of his ethical beliefs.

I get it we all have our beliefs. But what he failed to understand is this isn’t the situation I had hoped for, this isn’t something I wanted. This is something I have zero control over. He has no idea what its like to want nothing more than to carry a child to full term and be unable to do so.

If you have gone thru a miscarriage you know the pain and emotional roller it can be. I left Walgreens in tears, ashamed and feeling humiliated by a man who knows nothing of my struggles but feels it is his right to deny medication prescribed to me by my doctor.

Walgreens eventually contacted Ms. Arteaga “and apologized for how the situation was handled,” but said company policy allows their pharmacists to decline to fill prescriptions in such situations.

“To respect the sincerely held beliefs of our pharmacists while at the same time meeting the needs of our patients, our policy allows pharmacists to step away from filling a prescription for which they have a moral objection,” the company said in a statement.

Out singer/songwriter Eli Lieb shares this uplifting music video for his song, “When You Need a Friend,” which Eli wrote in the aftermath of a young, male transgender student as his old high school committing suicide.

Backed by The Trevor Project, Eli returned to his old school to reach out to kids there and spread some love.

Premiering the new video on NewNowNext, Eli shares:

“I wrote, ’When You Need A Friend’ inspired by his memory, but also for anyone in need,” he says. “I wanted people to know that times can be really tough but if you keep fighting through them, there’s a bright future ahead. I also wanted people to feel like they have a friend in me, even if they don’t know me personally. I want people to feel like when they play this song, that I am there with them offering support.”

Trump: SCOTUS Travel Ban Ruling Is “Profound Vindication”

Donald Trump

After the Supreme Court upheld Donald Trump’s Muslim travel ban, the White House issued this statement celebrating the news and simultaneously attacking Democrats and the media’s “hysterical commentary:”

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a tremendous victory for the American People and the Constitution. The Supreme Court has upheld the clear authority of the President to defend the national security of the United States. In this era of worldwide terrorism and extremist movements bent on harming innocent civilians, we must properly vet those coming into our country.

This ruling is also a moment of profound vindication following months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country.

As long as I am President, I will defend the sovereignty, safety, and security of the American People, and fight for an immigration system that serves the national interests of the United States and its citizens. Our country will always be safe, secure, and protected on my watch.”

June 26 – Our (Unofficial) National Gay Day

Three important Supreme Court rulings for the LGBTQ community have happened on June 26

Today’s date holds a special place in the hearts of LGBTQ people in America.

June 26 is the date on which the Obergefell ruling was handed down from the U.S. Supreme Court in 2015 making marriage equality the law of the land.

On this same date in 2013, SCOTUS struck down the hateful ‘Defense of Marriage Act’ in favor of Edie Windsor resulting in all legal marriages being recognized by the federal government.

And on this date in 2003, the high court struck down sodomy laws with their ruling on Lawrence v. Texas.

If there ever is a ‘gay national holiday’ it truly must be on June 26.

While Donald Trump has continued to ignore the LGBTQ community during Pride Month, Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez issued this statement observing the importance of today’s date:

“Before the Supreme Court handed down its decision in U.S. v. Windsor five years ago, Edie Windsor said, ‘I think justice will prevail. Is that crazy?’ Because of her indomitable spirit and the activism of millions of LGBTQ Americans, justice did prevail. Love is love. And America is better for it.

“All across the country, LGBTQ Americans and their allies have organized for equal rights and brought our nation closer to fulfilling its promise of equality for all people – no matter who they are or who they love. Today’s anniversaries remind us that while it may not happen overnight, progress is possible. As long as people raise their voices for what’s right, we can bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice.

“But our fight must continue. LGBTQ Americans still face inequality across our society – from bathrooms and boardrooms to bakeries and the ballot box. Every day, Republicans in Congress, the White House, and at the state and local level are trying to turn back the clock on LGBTQ rights. Even though marriage equality is the law of the land, that hasn’t stopped Republicans from trying to demean and delegitimize LGBTQ marriage through discriminatory adoption bills and so-called ‘religious liberty’ laws.

“The Democratic Party stands with LGBTQ communities in America and around the world. We believe that no one should face discrimination, bullying, or violence because of who they are or who they love. That’s why we’re working to enact legislation like the Equality Act to protect LGBTQ Americans. We believe in the values of inclusion and opportunity for all, and we will never stop fighting for the equality every human being deserves.”

“The march toward LGBTQ equality has been long and hard-fought — and it’s far from over. But some days, we’re reminded of just how far we’ve come. June 26th is one of those days.”
