Bullied bus monitor using “vacation money” to begin anti-bullying foundation

Image via Buzzfeed

Remember the viral video of New York bus monitor Karen Klein being brutally bullied by students? A campaign to send the poor woman resulted in over $700,000 being raised. This is what she’s doing with some of the money:

My story inspired more than 32,000 people to engage in their own act of love by donating to a fundraising campaign created by Max for my support. As you probably know, together we raised a lot more money than what I needed to go on vacation. 32,000 people around the world raised $703,873 for my behalf. It has changed my life forever. Now, I am not only going on vacation, but I am able to retire and take care of my family.

You have all inspired me by your acts of love. But now it is time for me to give back and to turn your single act of kindness into my own personal movement to stop bullying in America. The Karen Klein Anti-Bullying Foundation, which I am seeding with $100,000, will be the gathering point for millions of people to support the anti-bullying movement. Together, we will change the world.

AFER asks US Supreme Court to not accept Prop 8 appeal by opponents

The American Foundation for Equal Rights says the Supreme Court should decline the review the overturn of Proposition 8. Today the American Foundation for Equal Rights filed a brief in opposition to Protect Marriage’s demand to have their Prop 8 appeal heard. From Chris Geidner:

The case challenging the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8 is “an attractive vehicle” for determining “whether the States may discriminate against gay men and lesbians in the provision of marriage licenses” — but the Supreme Court should pass on the case, lawyers challenging the law say, and let stand an appeals court ruling that strikes down the 2008 amendment on narrow grounds.

If the Supreme Court takes the advice of Ted Olson, David Boies and the other lawyers representing the plaintiffs in Perry v. Brown, then Proposition 8 would remain unconstitutional, as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held, and same-sex couples in California would regain the right to marry that they had been able to exercise briefly in 2008.

Two lower courts have struck down the 2008 ban known as Proposition 8, and last month backers of the measure asked the Supreme Court to step in.

Four DOMA-related cases are also up for Supreme Court consideration.

GOP Mayor records ad supporting marriage equality to air during GOP Convention

Republican Mayor Jerry Sanders of San Diego, California speaks out about his support for marriage for gays and lesbians, and encourages others in his party to do the same.

The Human Rights Campaign and Freedom to Marry are running this ad in Tampa during the Republican National Convention.

Wow. I think this is very effective. Great message to send that, yes, marriage equality IS a family value.

San Francisco 49ers release first NFL team “It Gets Better” video

Today, the San Francisco 49ers became the first NFL team to join the international It Gets Better Project that tells LGBT youth the truth: life can stink, but things do indeed improve.

Watch 49ers players Ahmad Brooks, Ricky Jean Francois, Isaac Sopoaga, and Donte Whitner send the positive message that life does get better.

“The San Francisco 49ers are proud to join ItGetsBetter.org, to let all LGBT teens know that It Gets Better,” says Whitner as he and his teammates explain that life’s challenges make us who we are and that any difficulty we overcome together will make us a stronger person tomorrow.

I have to say, I love all of these videos but this one really gets me a bit.  Maybe because when I was struggling with my “self” and figuring out who I was as a teenager, my best friends were football players in high school.  Those two guys, John and David, always made me feel a part of the group even when we were around kids who bullied me and called me names.  Of course, that activity didn’t happen when John and David were around.  Not only were they popular, but they were also two big guys 🙂

Their friendship helped give me courage to figure myself out and  eventually be who I am.

I hope this video does that for some kids out there today.

Mitt Romney goes for the “birther” joke

Campaigning in Michigan on Friday, he made a joke about President Obama’s birth certificate. Here’s what he said:

“Now, I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born. Ann was born at Henry Ford Hospital, I was born at Harper Hospital. No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”

As a literal statement, this isn’t true. People have asked to see Romney’s birth certificate, and his campaign released it, with little fanfare, earlier this year. As a “joke,” it isn’t very funny. And as a reference to the controversy-that-won’t-die over the president’s origins, it’s a venture into very perilous territory for Romney.

Playboy’s Hugh Hefner supports marriage equality

Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, the world’s most famous heterosexual,  has shown his support for gay marriage by penning an article for Politico.com.

The publishing icon insists the battle to legalize the union between same-sex couples is a fight for human rights, and he urges politicians not to “infringe” on the freedom of U.S. citizens.

He writes, “The fight for gay marriage is, in reality, a fight for all of our rights. Without it, we will turn back the sexual revolution and return to an earlier, puritanical time. Today, in every instance of sexual rights falling under attack, you’ll find legislation forced into place by people who practice discrimination disguised as religious freedom.”

“No one should have to subjugate their religious freedom, and no one should have their personal freedoms infringed,” Hefner concludes. “This is America and we must protect the rights of all Americans.”

Rep. Todd Akin kills Romney lead in Missouri

As the controversy over Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment continues, Mitt Romney’s lead in Missouri has vanished.

One month ago, Mitt Romney was leading in the state by 6 points.

Today, however, according to Rasmussen Reports most recent poll of Likely Missouri Voters,  President Obama leads with 47% support to Romney’s 46%. Three percent (3%) favor some other candidate in the race, and three percent (3%) more are undecided.

In addition, before the kerfuffle the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Claire McCaskill was seen as “leaning Republican” in polls.  She now holds a 10 point lead and the seat is being seen as “safely Democrat” now.
