Chris Matthews addresses GOP party playing the “race” card

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
Chris Matthews, host of MSNBC’s “Hardball,” ripped into GOP chair Reince Priebus over Mitt Romney’s “birther” joke last week and playing the “race” card in campaign ads.

Said Matthews: “It is an embarrassment to your party to play that card… This stuff about getting rid of the work requirement for welfare is dishonest — everyone’s pointed out it’s dishonest… And you are playing that little ethnic card there. You can play your games and giggle about it, but the fact is that your side is playing that card.”

Priebus wasn’t having it but Chris Matthews did not back down. Good for Matthews. Priebus and the GOP can sit back and deny, but what Chris Matthews says here is true. And the GOP knows it.

Moon landing – July 20, 1969

Barely six years old at the time, I can actually remember the first moon landing.

Like practically every young boy at the time, I thought being an astronaut was the coolest job ever and pledged to grow up to be one.

Neil Armstrong passed away yesterday, August 25th at the age of 82.

A American hero who always often said he was just doing his job. He served his Nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut.

“Every human has a finite number of heartbeats and I don’t intend to waste any of mine.” – Neil Armstrong.

From Neil Armstrong’s family: “For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.”

Australian Rugby star David Pocock on marriage equality

Australian rugby player David Pocock says he supports marriage equality and won’t wed his girlfriend until everyone in the country can marry, PinkNews reports. Sitting on a panel for Australia’s TV program Q and A, Pocock also challenged homophobia in the sports and throughout the country, denouncing laws that make LGBT people separate and unequal.

“We’re dealing with people here,” said Pocock. “And how can you blame someone for what they are? People don’t choose their sexuality. We marginalize the LGBTI community for what they are. So I think this is a conversation that needs to be had, and we need to discuss it compassionately and actually come to something that’s reasonable. And in my mind, that’s marriage for everyone, regardless of their sexuality.”

Following a round of applause from the audience, member of Parliament John Alexander, whose Liberal Party opposes marriage equality, said that he votes in accord with the conscience of his constituents, who believe marriage is between a man and a woman. He proposed that Australia should have three types of marriage — straight marriage, a “Navratilova” marriage for two women (after lesbian tennis great Martina Navratilova), and “Alexander” marriage for two men, after Alexander the Great.

Trailer: Pitch Perfect – opens October 5th

Pitch Perfect, the debut feature from Avenue Q director Jason Moore, is a new comedy about the competition world of collegiate a capella singers. Think along the lines of a GLEE version of Bring It On and Mean Girls.

The film stars Twilight‘s Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson from Bridesmaids as members of the all-female group.

I spent some time with Rebel Wilson early this year at the premiere of her film A Few Best Men and it was obvious from her performances AND her intelligence that she is clearly someone to watch.

Pitch Perfect will be released in theaters October 5.

DVD: “Weekend” now available

Two men meet at a gay club and spend 48 hours together that will affect them forever.

This beautifully acted film is the breakout feature from British writer-director-editor Andrew Haigh. A tale of a one-night-stand that develops into a weekend-long experience for two very different young men. It’s an emotionally naked film that’s both a snapshot of the complexities of contemporary gay living and a universal portrait of a love affair.

Andrew Haigh’s bittersweet romance won countless accolades for the affecting, naturalistic performances from actors Tom Cullen and Chris New.

One of last year’s most compelling dramas is now available on DVD or rent it on iTunes.
