Ace Young & Diana DeGarmo, of American Idol fame, marry in LA

Last year Michael introduced me to Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, the first couple of American Idol.

Ace famously proposed to Diana on the season finale of American Idol last year, and yesterday we were lucky to be invited to attend their gorgeous wedding in Los Angeles.

In front of 250 guests, including fellow Idol alums Elliot Yamin, Michael Johns and Kevin Covais, and Idol coach (and friend for years) Michael Orland. Diana’s brother David returned from Afghanistan to walk her down the aisle making the ceremony that much more emotional.

People are what make a wedding the celebration that it is, and the people in attendance were some of the most fun I’ve met in a long time. Not only did we celebrate with Ace and Diana, but met up with my friend Tracy Powell (who I’ve worked with in the theater) and her fab “plus one” Dee Hoty of Broadway fabulousness. AND I spent much of the night with the Montoyas – Lori and Ron and fab sis Lisa Krause – of “Sin City Rules” and Rain Cosmetics fame.

Gorgeous people, gorgeous wedding, gorgeous night.

Happiness all around.

Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck “would have absolutely no problem” with a gay teammate

CNN asked Indianapolis Colts star quarterback Andrew Luck how he’d feel about an openly gay player on the team and in the NFL.

Luck gives a winning answer:

“I mean, it’s the 21 century. I know I would have absolutely no problem with it. I hope no one would treat him any differently than any straight player, and no special treatment. He’s another guy…It’s none of our business, the sexual preference of people. I hope if someone’s thinking about (coming out), that if they do come out as gay and are a professional football player, and it makes them happy and it makes their life easier, then I think they should do it….When it does, if it does come, I’d be disappointed if there was a negative reaction among players.”

Jean Stapleton of ALL IN THE FAMILY fame dies at 90

Jean Stapleton, who played Archie Bunker’s long-suffering wife Edith in the long-running 1970s television series “All in the Family,” died Friday at her New York City home. She was 90.

Stapleton died of natural causes, her family announced Saturday.
She had been a veteran of stage, film and television when she was cast in the CBS sitcom opposite Carroll O’Connor’s loud-mouthed, bigoted Archie Bunker, who often addressed her as “dingbat.” She won three Emmys for the role.
While her famed “dingbat-ness” was a source of constant comedy on the show, I think it was her quiet, intimate moments when “Edith” questioned life that moved me most.
Even as a young teenager I remember “Edith” becoming close friends with a transgender person/drag performer known as Beverly LaSalle (Lori Shannon) who came into their lives when Archie saved his life when he required CPR, remaining friends with him, despite Archie’s discomfort.  Edith later had a crisis of faith after Beverly’s death protecting Mike from muggers.
In the episode “Cousin Liz” (in which the Bunkers learn that her recently deceased cousin Liz was a lesbian with a life-partner, Veronica), Edith is at first shocked at the revelation, but quickly throws her arms around Veronica and warmly accepts her as Liz’s “true next-of-kin”, giving her the tea-set Liz’s spouse would have legally inherited. Edith was extremely popular because she was easily the sweetest character on the show, unconditionally loving everyone she knew and also managing to keep high spirits even when she faced tragedy.

Muscle/fitness photographer Brian Moss

Advocate.com is featuring a gallery of several pics by muscle/fitness photographer Brian Moss.

From the intimate, behind the scenes to sometimes outrageous (see above), Brian’s work is engaging and artful.

In Brian’s own words: “In 1982, I opened Better Bodies Gym in New York City. My gym quickly attracted local bodybuilders, and I became an active participant in the birth of women’s bodybuilding and the growth of men’s bodybuilding. Many of these bodybuilders remain close friends, and my experience with them has afforded me a level of trust and intimacy that they do not usually allow, let alone with a camera.

“In 1997, I picked up a camera for the first time since childhood and casually started to photograph the leading competitors in the bodybuilding and fitness world. My images are unguarded, honest, and voyeuristic. Whether they capture backstage scenes at the Mr. Olympia or private moments in a hotel room hours before the competitor steps out on stage, these images are imbued with an intimacy that had never been seen before.

“Many of my photographs of bodybuilders shot for advertising campaigns have become iconic and have influenced the way bodybuilders are now portrayed in ads.”

Police dog pays tribute to fallen partner at funeral

A heartbreaking photo from the funeral of Kentucky K9 officer Jason Ellis is proof of the incredible bond between police dogs and their partners.

The 33-year-old officer was killed in a suspected ambush on Saturday and laid to rest soon after, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. Ellis’ canine partner, Figo, who worked with him to find drugs and illegal substances, kept a vigil beside his casket.

Police Chief Rick McCubbin told the Associated Press that Figo and Ellis were “true partners.” Figo has been retired and will live with Ellis’ family.

President Obama’s official proclamation of 2013 LGBT Pride Month

The White House has issued President Obama’s proclamation in recognition of LGBT Pride Month.

The message cites the president’s support for ENDA, the federal bill to overturn DOMA, and HIV reduction campaigns.

Here’s the text of the proclamation:

For more than two centuries, our Nation has struggled to transform the ideals of liberty and equality from founding promise into lasting reality. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans and their allies have been hard at work on the next great chapter of that history — from the patrons of The Stonewall Inn who sparked a movement to service members who can finally be honest about who they love to brave young people who come out and speak out every day. This year, we celebrate LGBT Pride Month at a moment of great hope and progress, recognizing that more needs to be done.

Support for LGBT equality is growing, led by a generation which understands that, in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” In the past year, for the first time, voters in multiple States affirmed marriage equality for same-sex couples. State and local governments have taken important steps to provide much-needed protections for transgender Americans.

My Administration is a proud partner in the journey toward LGBT equality. We extended hate crimes protections to include attacks based on sexual orientation or gender identity and repealed “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” We lifted the HIV entry ban and ensured hospital visitation rights for LGBT patients. Together, we have investigated and addressed pervasive bullying faced by LGBT students, prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Federal housing, and extended benefits for same-sex domestic partners. Earlier this year, I signed a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in the implementation of any VAWA-funded program.

And because LGBT rights are human rights, my Administration is implementing the first-ever Federal strategy to advance equality for LGBT people around the world. We have witnessed real and lasting change, but our work is not complete. I continue to support a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act, as well as the Respect for Marriage Act. My Administration continues to implement the Affordable Care Act, which beginning in 2014, prohibits insurers from denying coverage to consumers based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, as well as the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which addresses the disparate impact of the HIV epidemic among certain LGBT sub-communities.

We have a long way to go, but if we continue on this path together, I am confident that one day soon, from coast to coast, all of our young people will look to the future with the same sense of promise and possibility. I am confident because I have seen the talent, passion, and commitment of LGBT advocates and their allies, and I know that when voices are joined in common purpose, they cannot be stopped.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2013 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh. – Barack Obama.
