Gay “Cutest Couple” yearbook pic goes viral

Chelsea, over on her Tumblr account “Singing-Showtunes,”  share the above pic with this note:

“Two of my best friends won Cutest Couple of our senior class. First time in my school history a same sex couple has even been able to run for this category, not to mention winning it. So proud of them, and my school.”

“This whole thing has been a bit surreal for us because we have been raised to believe that love is love,” the couple tells Huffington Post via email. “We never realized that our happiness and openness would inspire so many individuals. The support we have received from our family, friends, and even strangers has led us to believe that our affection for each other is normal … When we started dating a year [ago], the thought of a photo of us traveling throughout the world would be a bit frightening, but now we are proud to be part of the LGBT community.”

Let’s hear it for Dylan and Brad!  AND for their friend Chelsea, who’s obviously cool herself.

Joe Namath to LGBT haters – “Get over it”

Joe Namath on HuffPost Live says he has no problem with gays in sports. And those who do?

“I have friends that are gay. I’ve worked in theater, I’ve been in art, you know, for some time. We work shoulder to shoulder. There’s a lot of love from me to them, too. That’s life, you know. And if you’ve got a hangup about it, I hope you can get over it because it’s real.”

K-9 Police farewell salute goes viral

A K-9 police dog in Massachusetts was honored by officers Friday as he was walked to the animal hospital where he would be put down, CBS Boston reports:

Plymouth Police gathered Friday to say goodbye to their friend and K-9 partner German Shepherd Kaiser.

On Wednesday, the Plymouth Police Working Dog Foundation announced that Kaiser was suffering from kidney failure and would be laid to rest on Friday.

“Kaiser battled this disease with vigor and toughness like I have never seen before. Although, as of late, the disease has taken the upper hand forcing him out of his craft and ultimately out of this world,” Officer Jamie Lebretton wrote on the foundation’s Facebook page.

Kaiser, who worked with Officer Lebretton, was laid to rest in the Angel View Pet Cemetery in Middleboro. The photo above, for obvious reasons, has gone viral on social media.

Wrote Lebretton on Facebook:

RIP my boy. I could not have asked for a better partner or friend. May you rest easy and wait for me at that sacred bridge. I will be there my friend. I will be there. I will never forget you or our accomplishments. You made me a better person, a better handler, and a better cop. Till we meet again kai. I love you and will miss you daily.

And to my boys and blue. Never in my career have i ever been so proud. You out did yourselves today. I could not have asked for a better send off. Kaiser truly was part of the department and loved being a police dog. My fellow K-9 handlers, you are a cut above and showed everyone what being a handler is all about…our pups. I thank each of you and you have my respect forever.

Kenny Ballinger and Marc Higgins, thank you for being there for my family and i as we weathered the storm. It was difficult, but i gained strength through you.

Lastly, to all of you who sent your regards over the past few days…I thank you. I read every single post and listened to every message. Kaiser served you well and the streets of Plymouth were safer when he was on patrol. The compassion was overwhelming and i am humbled at the support from perfect strangers.

God Bless you all.

NJ: Sen. Frank Lautenberg dies at 89

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), the Senate’s oldest member and longtime LGBT ally, has died at 89, North Jersey reports:

The oldest member of the Senate, Lautenberg had struggled with health problems since late last year, when he missed several weeks of votes because of what he said was flu and bronchitis.

The death of Lautenberg, a Democrat who was the longest-serving senator in New Jersey history, creates a vacancy that Governor Christie, a Republican, will fill.

Lautenberg returned to Washington in February and announced he would not seek re-election in 2014, but hoped to complete a series of accomplishments before his term ended.

Lautenberg was the the author of the Ryan White Care Act, which is the largest federally-funded program for people living with HIV/AIDS. He had a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign.

Illinois: Possibility for end of summer passage of marriage equality

It seems there lies a possibility for Illinois to see marriage equality passed perhaps before summer’s end.

The Illinois Observer reports:

House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) acted quietly on Friday night before the House adjourned to extend the bill’s deadline for approval until August 31.

State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) told a packed House chamber on Friday evening that he had to put off a vote on the proposal until November.

However, were Governor Pat Quinn to call lawmakers back to Springfield in the summer for a special session to address pension reform, which also was left without resolution, he could include Senate Bill 10 in a special session proclamation.

If Quinn declines to include marriage equality in any order to lawmakers to return to Springfield, Madigan could call a House special session of his own at the same time to take up the legislation, an insider noted.

“It’s a fascinating move,” said one, long-time lobbyist. “It suggests that there is plan to get it done.”

However – nothing is certain, and a new wrinkle develops with this scenario. The Observer points out that:

“Nevertheless, during a summer session, House lawmakers would need to amend the bill and change the effective date from ’30 days’ from a gubernatorial signature to January 1 in order to avoid a 3/5th or 71 vote requirement, an insurmountable hurdle. Amending the bill’s effective date would also require an Illinois Senate vote to concur with such a change.”

That being said, the state Senate would have to come back to approve the changes.

More complications.

Stay tuned.
