Church officials in the Dominican Republic call US ambassador nominee “maricón”

Last month President Obama nominated openly gay DNC co-chair Wally Brewster to be ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

Here’s how the local the Catholic Church reacted this week:

Religious groups in the country have objected to Brewster solely because he’s gay. Perhaps the biggest offender has been Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, the Roman Catholic leader in the country. At a press conference, Rodriguez called Brewster a “maricón,” which is usually translated as “faggot.” Not content to leave it at that, the Cardinal’s sidekick, Monsignor Pablo Cedano decided to chime in.

“I hope he does not arrive in the country because I know if he comes he is going to suffer and will have to leave,” Cedano said. He called it “a lack of respect” that Obama “sent … a person of this kind as an ambassador,” adding, “[W]e don’t despise the person.”

Of course, why we would EVER think that?

The nominee, James “Wally” Brewster, must still be confirmed by the Senate and is the latest in a flurry of appointments of gay Americans for ambassadorships by the Obama administration. Five others were named just in the last month. Only three openly gay ambassadors have served before them.

New Mexico: Albuquerque Pride shuts down haters at Pride Parade

Nope, the Pride goers were not feeling the anti-gay vibe crashing the end of their own parade.

And they shut it down.

From Advocate.com: The so-called Christian protesters carried picket signs, and one even had a gun strapped to his belt. They attempted to set up at the end of Albuquerque’s LGBT Pride parade route, but the crowd quickly shouted them down, resulting in a police escort removing the hateful group from the scene.

NYC: Two men harass young Pride goers on Queens-bound F train

On Sunday night, two men harassed and then assaulted a group of young New York City pride goers on the subway. If anyone knows them, please contact the authorities.

From the clip’s description:

On Sunday, June 30th at around 11:45 PM, I was riding home on the Queens-bound F train following a day of LGBT Pride festivities. Two men were loudly making homophobic comments, such as “Today was a scary day for me. There were fags everywhere.” When a group of queer youth got on the train, the men proceeded to harass them, stating that the teens made them want to puke and that they would be killed if they were in Iran. The first assailant then threatened to rape them, at which point I took out my phone to document the incident.

Seeing that he was being recorded, the first assailant lunged at me, violently grabbing my arms while trying to steal away my phone. One of the youth took the phone from me temporarily to protect it and told the assailant he shouldn’t attack a woman. When the assailant threatened to punch me, I took the phone back and ran to the other side of the train to push the emergency button and alert the authorities. At this point the second assailant got up and came towards me, grabbing my body and hands to try and get the phone to destroy the evidence. I yelled and told him I was an attorney. An onlooker then got up and stood between the assailants and myself, and another person left to get the train conductor.

A group of people had gathered to stand up to the gay bashers. During this, the second assailant put his hand around the neck of a young queer woman. When the doors opened up at the Roosevelt Ave stop, both assailants fled. I followed them to the station exit while calling 911. One witness had overheard them saying they were on route to Jamaica; they’re likely commuters who regularly take this route.

I uploaded the video to YouTube to see if anyone can identify these men. I was left with bruises and scratches from both assailants which I also documented. If anyone sees them or knows them personally, please contact the authorities. This was a hate crime.

Marriage equality support hits record high in USA

Support for same-sex marriage in the United States has hit a record high just days after landmark US Supreme Court rulings on the issue, a poll showed Tuesday.

According to a survey published by USA Today,  55 percent of participants versus 40 percent said they believed same-sex marriages should be recognized as valid, with couples granted the same rights as heterosexual couples.

The only two demographic groups where a majority remained opposed to same-sex marriage were Republicans (68 percent) and people over the age of 65 (51 percent).

The poll of 1,003 adults was carried out between June 27-30 by Princeton Survey Research Associates, with a margin of error of 3.6 points either way.

Alexander Skarsgård knows how to photo bomb at pic.

While his siblings were seen sitting on a couch, the True Blood star popped in the back corner of the shot and flexed his famous muscles for the camera.

I always say “when you’ve got a Porsche, you don’t keep it in the garage.”

While chatting with Conan O’Brien last month he explained that he became accustomed to nudity while growing up in his less-than usual household.

“My dad and his side of the family are old hippies,” he revealed. “I was 14 the first time I saw my dad wearing pants. He was always naked.”

Homeland Security – married LGBT couples will be treated same as opposite-sex couples regarding immigration

The department of Homeland Security today issued a statement affirming that married gay and lesbian couples will be treated like married straight couples for immigration purposes:

“After last week’s decision by the Supreme Court holding that Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, President Obama directed federal departments to ensure the decision and its implication for federal benefits for same-sex legally married couples are implemented swiftly and smoothly,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano in a prepared statement today. “To that end, effective immediately, I have directed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to review immigration visa petitions filed on behalf of a same-sex spouse in the same manner as those filed on behalf of an opposite-sex spouse.”

According to The DOMA Project, Julian Marsh and Traian Popov of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., were surprised when they received notification just two days after the repeal of DOMA from Citizenship and Immigration Services officials that Popov’s petition for permanent residency based on his bona fide marriage had been approved.

Forward!
