Costco CEO Craig Jelinek on paying a living wage
Costco pays it’s workers far more than most of their competitors, offers employees opportunities for promotion and enjoys markedly lower worker turnover and far higher sales per employee than their low-road counterparts. Sales per employee at Costco are nearly double that at Sam’s Club.
Recent quarterly reports show Costco saw an 8% increase in year-on-year sales while WalMart saw an anemic 1.2%. You do the math…
At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Costco pays their employees a livable wage and gets sales per employee at double what Walmart subsidiary Sam’s Club gets from their employees who work for lousy pay.
Maybe the time has come for Wal-Mart to take a lesson from Costco and consider the potential upside of treating employees like human beings.

Video fitness star Shaun T joins Athlete Ally

Fitness guru and creator of “Insanity” workout program Shaun Blokker, better known as Shaun T, has signed on to become the newest Ambassador of Athlete Ally, a leading organization working to raise awareness about and end homophobia in sports.
Blokker’s athletic and choreographic talents led him to success in the fitness training industry, and he produced highly successful programs like “Hip Hop Abs” and “Insanity”. He recently stepped forward as a member of the LGBT community, and joining Athlete Ally affirms his commitment to making the world of sports and athletics as inclusive as possible.
I worked with Shaun T as a dancer in 2005 in Los Angeles in the Reprise Series production of “Applause” right before his huge video fitness career took off. He’s a great guy, and I’m glad to see him make good use of the celebrity that’s come his way. Bravo, Shaun T.

Sarah Palin “considering” US Senate run
Politico reports that Sarah Palin, former half-term Governor of Alaska, is considering a run for the U.S. Senate in her home state:
“I’ve considered it because people have requested me considering it, but I’m still waiting to see what the lineup will be and hoping that … there will be some new blood, some new energy,” the former governor told Sean Hannity during an appearance on his radio show.
Two Republicans have already announced challenges to Democratic freshman Sen. Mark Begich: Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell and 2010 GOP nominee Joe Miller.
The numbers don’t look great for Palin right now, though.
According to a recent PPP poll, in a hypothetical race, Begich leads Palin by a sizable margin – 54% vs. 38%
Palin’s numbers are a reflection of her continuing to be very unpopular on the home front- 34% of voters see her positively to 59% with a negative opinion.
She, of course, won’t run for three reasons:
She doesn’t want to give up the big paycheck from FOX News.
She doesn’t want to be accountable to folks if she returns to elected office.
She runs and loses – her political “star” is dimmed that much more.
Won’t happen.

Openly gay student wins appeal, $65K settlement after expulsion due to using stun gun on bullies
Dynasty Young, an openly gay student, moved to Indianapolis and enrolled at Arsenal Tech for the 2011-2012 school year. He said he endured months of harassment and bullying from other students while school administrators refused to acknowledge the abuse.
He was expelled in 2012 after using a stun gun to fight off a group of bullies. His family later sued, saying the district failed to protect him and didn’t stop students from bullying him, instead calling him “too flamboyant” in school.
Young later enrolled at Indianapolis Metropolitan, a charter school. He graduated in June 2013. The following month, his attorneys announced that the suit with IPS had been settled. The district agreed to take the expulsion off his permanent action and compensated him with $65,000.
