Gus Kenworthy Has Thirsty Reaction To Hunky Marine’s Election Victory

Gus Kenworthy had quite the thirsty response to the news that openly gay, former Marine Neil Rafferty had won his race for the Alabama state house.

Responding to the news that Rafferty won his seat in Alabama’s 54th District, Kenworthy tweeted, “I have another seat for him” and added a blond, bearded face emoji.

California: Shooting In Thousand Oaks Bar Leaves 12 Dead

Another mass shooting has occurred, this time in a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, that left 12 dead.

The incident began at approximately 11:20pm at the Borderline Bar and Grill,  which was holding its regular “College Country Night.”

The shooter has been identified as a former U.S. Marine who may have been coping with post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the L.A. Times.

Ian David Long, 28, lived in Newbury Park, not far from the club where he threw smoke bombs and rained bullets on a crowd of more than a hundred people Wednesday night.

Sheriff Geoff Dean said his department had had several interactions with Long, including a call to his home in April for a complaint of disturbing the peace. Deputies at the time said Long was irate and acting irrationally, Dean said. They called in mental health professionals to evaluate him, and they concluded he did not need to be taken into custody.

In the neighborhood where Long lived, residents said they were well aware of his problems.

Richard Berge, 77, said the former Marine had PTSD and was known to kick in the walls of the home. Long lived with his mother, Berge said.

“She’s a very sweet woman, but she had a lot of problems with the son,” Berge said. “I just know he tore the house up.”

Long was dressed in black when he burst into the Borderline Bar & Grill, a country-music-themed venue popular with college students, around 11:20 p.m. He drove his mother’s car to the bar and did not say anything before opening fire, a law enforcement official said.

The shooter was armed with a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun with an extended magazine that he purchased legally in Simi Valley, Dean said. A source said he also had a “smoke device.”

Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year Sheriff’s Department veteran who was planning to retire next year, was the first to enter the bar. He suffered severe wounds and later died in the hospital.

He is survived by a son and his wife, whom he called before entering the bar, Dean said.

No motive has been determined.

And right-wing loons immediately tried to set the narrative that the shooter was “Middle Eastern.”

On today’s episode of The Randy Report,  I’m chatting with actor & singer Jim Newman.

In addition to a lengthy Broadway resume (Hands on a Hardbody, Curtains, Minnelli on Minnelli, Steep Pier, Sunset Boulevard, and The Who’s Tommy), Jim is also currently ‘The Cowboy’ in a very iconic 70s/80s disco band you know very well.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions Resigns ‘At The Request’ Of Donald Trump

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has resigned at the request of the president.

Isn’t that like being fired?

Sessions’ resignation comes a day after the midterm elections, which was long seen as the expiration date for Sessions’ tenure as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer. Trump made clear his displeasure with Sessions early on, but wasn’t expected to make any major changes in his cabinet before the election.

Trump later confirmed in a tweet that he had accepted Sessions’ resignation and thanked him for his service. An administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Kelly called Sessions before the president held a press conference midday Wednesday to ask for his resignation.

Session’s chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will take over as acting attorney general, while the White House seeks a permanent replacement, Trump tweeted shortly after Sessions’ letter became public.

Whitaker, who will be sworn in on Wednesday, will take on oversight of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election, assuming there are no ethics issues that would prevent him from doing so.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein — who was still in his job as of Wednesday afternoon — had taken on responsibility for the probe after Sessions recused last year.

Under Justice Department regulations, Mueller can only be removed from office “for misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or for other good cause.”

Woofy Former Marine Wins Big In Alabama Race

One more fantastic midterm election result to report.

Hunky gay former Marine Neil Rafferty came out on top last night in his race for the state House seat in Alabama’s District 54.

Not only did he win – he won BIG!

According to AL.com, Rafferty trumped his opponent, Independent Joseph Casper Baker III by a margin of 90% to 10%!

Since 2006, the seat has been held by openly LGBT Rep. Patricia Todd who chose to retire this year. Todd endorsed Rafferty’s candidacy.

The political newbie had never run for political office before.

The Birmingham native spent four years in the U.S. Marines before returning home to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

He currently works as the director of research and development at Birmingham AIDS Outreach.

Rafferty joined the Marines after his longtime boyfriend, Michael Rudolph had been deployed twice to Iraq as a Marine so they could stay together even though ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ was still in effect.

The couple, now together 14 years, are currently engaged and planning their wedding.

Nevada Elects Dead Pimp To Office Over Live Democrat

One more election result from the midterm elections to chat on.

There was lots of talk on cable news last night about how unpredictable elections tend to be in Florida.

But Nevada has its own unusual result that definitely lands in the ‘who would have thought’ category.

And it really explains how determined some folks are to just vote their party whether it pays off or not.

Dennis Hof, who’s a bit of a celebrity in the Silver State as the owner of seven legally-run brothels, won his race in the state Assembly District 36 by 26 points, defeating his Democratic opponent Lesia Romanov 63% to 37%.

Its a deep red district, and his semi-fame (he and one of his brothels is the subject of the HBO series Cathouse) surely helped him out.

The only problem is he died last month after partying hardy on his 72nd birthday.

According to state laws, it was too late to remove his name from the ballot.

District 36 covers all of Nye County and parts of Lincoln and Clark counties. So all three boards of commissioners will have to come together and agree on a replacement for the ‘vacancy.’

Nye County Commission Chairman John Koenig told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the commissioners will “probably put an advertisement in the newspaper, and solicit names for a short period of time.”

So Florida may have its surprises, but as Eric Herzik, political science chair at the University of Nevada/Reno said, “We voted for a dead man.”

Fireworks At Trump Press Conference – “You Are A Rude, Terrible Person”

There were serious fireworks today at the White House as Donald Trump lit into CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta who attempted to ask the Trumpster about his characterization of the migrants making their way from Central America to the U.S. border.

“That’s enough. That’s enough. Put down the mic.

“I’ll tell you what. CNN should be ashamed of itself having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN. You’re a very rude person.

“The way you treat Sarah Huckabee is horrible. And the way you treat other people are horrible. You shouldn’t treat people that way.”

Gee, do you think Trump is a little edgy after the takeover of the House by the Democrats?

Trump Warns Soon-To-Be Democratic Controlled House On Possible Investigations

Donald Trump, after seeming a bit more open to ‘playing nice’ in an interview with right-leaning Sinclair Broadcast Group yesterday, was back to the same old Grump Trump this morning.

On Twitter, Trump sent a warning shot to Democrats about possible White House investigations by the soon-to-be Democratic-controlled House as well as renewed his attacks on the Mueller investigation.

My Recap Of The 2018 Midterm Elections – Who Won? Who Made History?

With the 2018 midterm elections in the rearview mirror – and the 2020 election cycle set to begin at any moment – here’s my big recap of what happened last night and how it will affect LGBTQ Americans going forward.

While a “blue wave” was anticipated, to different degrees, over the past few months, we’re more inclined to describe last night’s elections as a “blue splash,” as there was a big shift for the country and several important ‘ripples’ that followed.

First up, and most important for the entire country, Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives.

At this writing, according to The New York Times, Democrats flipped 27 seats (more than the necessary 23) to blue and there are still several contests looking good for Dems that haven’t been called.

What this means is, for the first time, a lever of Congress will be holding Trump and Republicans accountable.

All committee chair positions will be assumed by Democrats including the Ways and Means Committee (which determines spending for the House), the House Oversight Committee (expect subpoenas to be issued and investigations to be launched) and more.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi is expected to return as Speaker of the House, and she’s already announced The Equality Act, which would expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 giving LGBTQ people federal protection from discrimination in terms of employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. 

While no one expects the legislation to pass with a Republican-controlled Senate and White House, Democrats will certainly give the bill energy and momentum so it could be signed by a pro-LGBTQ president, hopefully after 2020.

Even more important perhaps, though, is oversight of the Trump administration’s anti-LGBT policies including “religious freedom” laws, the transgender military ban, and efforts to define laws against sex discrimination to exclude LGBT people.

A huge win for LGBTQ folks last night was Jared Polis’ win in Colorado as the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a state.

Also, Gov. Kate Brown of Oregon clinched her bid for reelection. She became the nation’s first openly bisexual governor in 2015.

Unfortunately, transgender Vermonter Christine Hallquist and Texas’ openly lesbian Lupe Valdez lost their races for the governorship.

Joshua Tenorio became Guam’s Lt. Governor making him the first openly gay elected to territory-wide office. Guam also elected its first female governor, Lou Leon Guerrero.

Governorships are extremely important because they can set the policies and agenda for states in opposition to the White House. And, governors will oversee the 10-year redistricting efforts to come in 2020 after the census. That will allow a course correction from the gerrymandering Republicans enacted in 2010 which helped to hamper Democratic efforts in the years since.

Also, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Maine, Kansas, Nevada and New Mexico flipped their governorships to Democrat which will have a huge impact on the 2020 elections.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, the only openly lesbian in the Senate, coasted to reelection.

Sharice Davids becomes the first gay Native American elected to Congress winning Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District.

Angie Craig beat Republican Jason Lewis to become the first openly LGBTQ person elected to Congress from Minnesota, and the first LGBTQ mother in Congress.

New York’s 18th Congressional District reelected gay father of three Sean Patrick Maloney to his fourth term in the House.

With his victory over Republican Eddie Edwards, Chris Pappas becomes the first openly gay member of Congress from New Hampshire.

Openly bisexual Katie Hill currently leads by 2.5% in her California race to unseat anti-LGBTQ Republican Steve Knight in the 25th District.

Openly gay Congressman Mark Pocan of Wisconsin easily won his reelection bid, as did David Cicilline of Rhode Island and Mark Takano of California.

J.D. Ford unseated one of Indiana’s most conservative state senators becoming the Hoosier state’s first out state legislator.

Pennsylvania elected Malcolm Kenyatta to its state House becoming the first out gay black man to be elected to the PA legislature. Read more about his win here.

Also in Pennsylvania, woofy Brian Sims easily won reelection to the state House. Go Team Bear!

Gay former Marine Neil Rafferty won his bid to the Alabama state House where he’ll replace retiring Patricia Todd, the state’s first openly gay legislator.

Maryland State Delegate Mary Washington makes history as the first openly LGBTQ person of color to be elected to the Maryland Senate.

Also in Maryland, Gabriel Acevero is the first openly gay black man elected to the Maryland Assembly.

Jennifer Webb becomes the first openly LGBTQ woman to be elected to the Florida legislature.

Two transgender women, Gerri Cannon and Lisa Bunker, were elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. They join Virginia state Delegate Danica Roem as the only openly transgender members of any state legislature.

Massachusetts sent a strong message of support to the transgender community as Proposition 3, asking if Bay Staters wanted to keep protections for trans people in place, sailed to victory with over 68%.

Florida voters passed Amendment 4 which will restore voting rights to felons (other than for murder or rape) who have served their time in prison and paid their debt to society.

And there were wins for prominent LGBTQ allies as well.

Zach Wahls, who famously defended his two moms speaking to Iowa lawmakers about same-sex marriage in 2011, will now become part of that very body after winning his contest to Iowa’s state Senate.

Nevada elected pro-LGBTQ Jacky Rosen to the U.S. Senate, the one Senate pickup for the Dems last night.

Also of note, Kim Davis, the infamous Kentucky County Clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the U.S. Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land, lost her reelection bid.

There were some heartbreaking losses last night as well.

Andrew Gillum of Florida and Beto O’Rourke in Texas lost their high profile bids to win seats in the U.S. Senate.

In addition, losses in Missouri and North Dakota mean the Republicans expand their majority in the Senate by two.
