Celebrating My Birthday & The Anniversary Of My Best Friendship

Carlye at Disney World; both of us at the opening night of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ on Broadway
Today, France celebrates Bastille Day, or as we say in my house, my birthday. I am not a ‘birthday person.’ I never have been, not that I mind getting older. The best part of my birthday really isn’t about me. The best part of my birthday is the anniversary of one of the best parts of my life. The best part of my birthday is that on July 14, 1980, I found my best friend, the foundation of who I am and how I got here. Today is the anniversary of the day Carlye and I officially became best friends. Yes, officially. We decided on that day. I can never write enough about how I was made better the day we met. I can never write enough about how Carlye and her family made me feel like I belonged. I can never write enough about how Carlye and I survived New York City and life together: • being briefly homeless at midnight on October 30, 1985 • living in what we called ‘the hovel’ in a six-floor walk-up on the Upper East Side • waiting tables and auditioning, and waiting tables and auditioning, and waiting tables and auditioning • getting to opening nights • getting through funerals • getting through illnesses – hers and mine I could all go on and on. But I’ll leave it at that – for now. The best part of my birthday is not about ‘me.’ It is about ‘we.’ Happy birthday to me, but more importantly happy anniversary Carlye.

Gay Twitter Responds To FDA Warning On Poppers

(image via FDA)
The Food and Drug Administration recently issued warnings about the use of alkl nitrate inhalants (aka poppers) noting there’s been an increase of hospitalizations and even death associated with their use. “These products are marketed as nail polish removers but are being ingested or inhaled for recreational use,” the statement reads. “’Poppers’ are sold online or at adult novelty stores and packaged in small bottles, ranging from 10 to 40 mL. They appear similar to energy shots, with brand names including Jungle Juice, Extreme Formula, HardWare, Quick Silver and Super RUSH.” How or why the FDA is suddenly aware of poppers that the gay community has used since the 1960s is a question many folks in the Twtterverse had, in addition to having quite the laugh about the warning itself.

Disney World Drops Gendered Announcements, Snowflakes Whine

For years, audiences of the nightly fireworks show at Disneyland and Disney World would hear, “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dreamers of all ages.” Last week, the announcement was shortened to simply, “Good evening, dreamers of all ages.” According to Deadline. the new, genderless announcement will be incorporated at other Disney parks including Tokyo Disneyland. The change comes amid other efforts to update or remove outdated portions of rides. Some of the amusements being tweaked include racially-insensitive aspects of the Jungle Cruise and Splash Mountain. The company has also recently relaxed its rules on employee expression in regard to hairstyles, jewelry, nails, and tattoos. The Miami Herald reports the updates were well-received by LGBTQ guests and workers, but apparently some conservatives chose to be offended. One person tweeted, “Disney gets more ridiculous every day.” “I HATE THAT. BRING IT BACK NOW!!!” wrote another. I guess I’m surprised that anyone would bother to even write out a tweet over such a minor thing. #snowflakes

New NFL Ad: ‘Football Is Gay’

A new ad from the NFL boldly declares "football is gay" along with a whole lot of other identifiers

A new ad from the NFL boldly declares "football is gay" along with a whole lot of other identifiers A new ad spot from the NFL boldly declares “Football is gay.” Set to a raucous drum solo, the text of the ad continues: “Football is lesbian. Football is beautiful. Football is queer. Football is life. Football is exciting. Football is culture. Football is transgender. Football is queer. Football is heart. Football is power. Football is tough. Football is bisexual. Football is strong. Football is freedom. Football is American. Football is accepting. Football is everything. Football is for everyone.” The spot closes with a message of support for The Trevor Project, the nation’s leading suicide support group for LGBTQ youth. The text quotes studies which have shown, “LGBTQ+ youth with at least one accepting adult have 40% lower risk of attempting suicide.”

Following the recent coming out announcement from Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib, it would seem the NFL wants to make clear its support. Sam Rapoport, NFL senior director of diversity, equity and inclusion, told Outsports, “I am proud of the clear message this spot sends to the NFL’s LGBTQ+ fans: This game is unquestionably for you. I will be playing its first line over and over in my head all season.”

One Year Ago Today: Snoopy The Wonder Dog

Snoopy the wonder dog

Snoopy the wonder dog One year ago today our lives were changed for the better when this guy became a part of our family for far too short a time. Snoopy adopted us on June 22, 2020, after being surrendered by his only family at the age of 14 and a half. A short time later we discovered he had advanced cancer. We did everything we could for the Snoop, including some chemotherapy treatments. But we kept his quality of life at the center of every decision we made in terms of his care. We had three amazing, fun-filled months with the Snoop.

June 22, 2020 – the day we met Snoopy
At one point, we noticed he could have a charming gruffness to him that reminded us of Ed Asner’s ‘Lou Grant’ from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. There were moments he was playful as a puppy and other times when he’d look at us and seemed to be channeling Lou Grant’s famous line, “I hate spunk,” and then look away. I know this could be read as a sad post, but it’s not. The gift of life this guy gave us changed us forever. We miss Snoop every day but we’re so glad he happened to us. Please consider adopting adult/senior dogs. I made this video for Michael for Christmas celebrating Snoopy and the awesome life he shared with us last summer. The song – Sammy Davis Jr.’s cover of The Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song – is a nod to our ‘Mr. Grant.’ And the lyrics so perfectly described Snoopy’s effect on everyone he met.
