Rep. Liz Cheney Now Says ‘I Was Wrong’ On Marriage Equality

In an interview with 60 Minutes Sunday night, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) told CBS News’ Leslie Stahl she was “wrong” to denounce same-sex marriage in 2013, and now supports marriage equality. Cheney’s previous opposition led to widely reported friction with her sister, Mary Cheney, who is an out lesbian. https://twitter.com/60Minutes/status/1442272844197494786 The sisters’ father – former Vice President Dick Cheney — was instrumental in promoting anti-LGBTQ  discrimination during the George W. Bush administration. Cheney, 55, has represented Wyoming’s at-large congressional district since 2017 and faces a tough re-election campaign next year. Ms. Cheney has been in the political spotlight for the past several months for her open criticism of Donald Trump and “the Big Lie.” Republicans stripped Cheney of her leadership role this summer for opposing Trump’s claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election. That said, many on Twitter weren’t quite sure about the “change of heart” as the congresswoman voted against the Equality Act in February. The legislation would have amended the 1964 Civil Rights Act to explicitly prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In the interview, Cheney also brought up support for transgender rights.
