Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced today that Tyler Robinson has been formally charged in connection to the shooting death of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.
The charges include: felony aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of felony obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child.

Prosecutors say the aggravating factors to the charges are due to the gunman presumably targeting Kirk because of his political expression. In Utah, “aggravated murder” is the only path to the death penalty, which prosecutors say they will seek.
The obstruction of justice charges were based on Robinson’s efforts to hide evidence from the shooting (i.e. clothing, rifle).
Gray also told reporters Robinson had exchanged text messages with his roommate and the roommate provided those messages to the authorities.
The witness tampering charges refer to Robinson allegedly telling his roommate to delete “incriminating texts” and to “stay silent” if police questioned him.
Gray also shared that DNA consistent with Robinson’s was found on the trigger and other parts of a rifle that was found near the crime scene as well as on a towel that the weapon had been wrapped in.
DNA consistent with Robinson’s was also found on the fired cartridge casing and two of the three unfired cartridges, as well as on a towel that the weapon had been wrapped in, he said.
