UPDATE: CNN is reporting that Charlie Kirk, a far-right commentator/activist, was shot in the neck in the neck and subsequently died while hosting a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University.
I disagree with Charlie Kirk on pretty much every issue, but violence is not the way.
More from the New York Times:
Cellphone videos posted online showed people running from the event after a gunshot rang out. One video appeared to show Mr. Kirk’s head jerking back as blood poured from his neck. He had been delivering remarks while sitting under a tent with the slogan “The American Comeback” printed on it.
A university spokeswoman, Ellen Treanor, said that Mr. Kirk was struck about 20 minutes after he began speaking on campus. She said a suspect had fired at Mr. Kirk from the Losee Center, a building about 200 yards away, and been taken into custody.
The police have determined that a person who was taken into custody after the shooting was not actually the shooter.
Kirk, a college dropout himself, founded Turning Point USA – a right-wing political organization with more than 850 campus chapters – when he was 18-years-old.
From CNN:
Kirk was known for debating college students about abortion rights, which he opposed; climate change, which he downplayed; and transgender rights, which he rejected.
He frequently sought to rally young people around traditional gender roles. He also backed Trump’s mass deportation efforts.
I’ve covered Kirk’s many anti-LGBTQ positions many times in the past.
Notably, he said gay people are “destructive” and endorsed having them put to death, calling Leviticus 20:13, which endorses the execution of homosexuals, “God’s perfect law when it comes to sexual matters.”
He frequently spread disinformation about transgender people and gender-affirming care, painting LGBTQ+ equality as a threat to American culture.
I’ll also note that after former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked with a hammer in his home by a MAGA supporter, Kirk told his podcast audience “some amazing patriot should bail him out” of jail. Take that as you will.
His opinions and comments were loathsome, but killing him wasn’t the answer. This is more fuel on a fire of incivility.

There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now. Jill and I are praying for Charlie Kirk’s family and loved ones.

I am deeply disturbed by the shooting in Utah. Doug and I send our prayers to Charlie Kirk and his family.
Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.

The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form.

Charlie Kirk (2023): “I think it’s worth to have a cost of unfortunately some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the 2nd Amendment. That is a prudent deal. It is rational. Nobody talks like this. They live in a complete alternate universe.” pic.twitter.com/sEHw5suXEW
