The House of Representatives voted 311 to 114 to expel truth-challenged out Rep. George Santos this morning. Two hundred ninety votes was the threshold to remove him from office. Good. I can’t stand liars. Two Democrats voted against expelling Rep. George Santos from the House. They were Bobby Scott of Virginia and Nikema Williams of Georgia. Meanwhile, two Democrats voted present: Jonathan Jackson of Illinois and Al Green of Texas. https://twitter.com/greggiroux/status/1730619697505206540 And just like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, George Santos’s time in Congress comes to an end. He is just the sixth House member to be expelled in the history of the chamber, and the third since the Civil War. From CNN:
GOP Rep. George Santos told CNN after the House voted to expel him that “it’s over.”
“The House spoke that’s their vote. They just set new dangerous precedent for themselves,” he added.
When asked if he would still stay and use nonmember privileges because he is not convicted, Santos said, “Why would I want to stay here? To hell with this place.”
Shortly before the vote, Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) sent an email to his fellow Republicans stating that earlier this year that Santos’ campaign “had charged my personal credit card — and the personal card of my Mother — for contribution amounts that exceeded FEC limits. Neither my Mother nor I approved these charges or were aware of them.” Miller added that it has cost him “tens of thousands of dollars” in legal fees dealing with the situation. He went on to say that he has seen a list of 400 people that were also over-charged by Santos, including other Republican House members. During the debate on the House floor to expel Santos yesterday, Miller called Santos a “crook,” to which Santos countered saying Miller had been accused of being a “woman beater.” https://twitter.com/keithboykin/status/1730330749419843834 https://twitter.com/SollenbergerRC/status/1730613918597325199
Santos still faces a 23-count federal indictment accusing him of stealing campaign donors’ identities and putting tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges on their credit cards.
Gov. Kathy Hochul will have to make a proclamation of a special election within ten days, with an election for New York’s 3rd District occurring “not less than seventy nor more than eighty days” following the proclamation. At least 16 candidates have filed to run for the office. https://twitter.com/justinbaragona/status/1730627554623578214 https://twitter.com/kevinddaly/status/1730628924621594652
