George Santos Hit With 10 More Criminal Charges

Truth-challenged out Rep. George Santos (R-NY) now faces 23 criminal charges, including defrauding campaign donors and wire fraud. The Department of Justice filed a superseding indictment today, adding 10 new charges to 13 previously announced charges. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1711869397281780159 The new charges include: • One count of conspiracy to commit offenses against the United States • Two counts of wire fraud • Two counts of making materially false statements to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) • Two counts of falsifying records submitted to obstruct the FEC • Two counts of aggravated identity theft • One count of access device fraud “As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign,” said United States Attorney Peace in a press statement. He added, “Santos falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen.” Santos pleaded not guilty to the initial 13 criminal charges. When asked by reporters about the new charges today, Santos said he didn’t know what they were talking about. https://twitter.com/casssemyon/status/1711877975665197187 Nancy Marks, Santos’ ex-campaign treasurer, pleaded guilty last week to conspiracy to defraud, telling the court she falsely reported a $500,000 loan that Santos had claimed he made to his campaign. Prosecutors say Marks and Santos plotted to falsely inflate his campaign’s fund-raising numbers in order to qualify for a program run by a Republican Party committee that would help Santos with financial support. https://twitter.com/mkraju/status/1711887876353327345 https://twitter.com/PaulRudnickNY/status/1711885550150406221
