94th Academy Award Nominations Announced

The 94th Annual Academy Awards nominations were announced this morning and while there were strong performances by LGBTQ talent and LGBTQ-inclusive films in the mix, there wasn’t a ton of Oscar love for queer film artists. Some of the LGBTQ-inclusive nominations include: Netflix’s gay-themed The Power of the Dog dominated the Academy Awards on with 12 nominations, the most of any film. Out actor Kristen Stewart is nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance as Princess Diana in Spencer. Golden Globe winner Ariana DeBose was honored with a nomination in the Supporting Actress category for her acclaimed portrayal of Anita in West Side Story. Should she win, DeBose would become the first queer woman of color to take home an Academy Award. Flee, the animated docudrama directed by Jonas Poher Rasmussen, is based on the filmmaker’s queer best friend who fled Afghanistan and looks back on his life before his wedding day. The film is nominated for Best Documentary, Best Animated Feature, Best International Feature Film and Best Score. The Mitchells Vs. The Machines is also nominated in the Animated category. Out actor Abbi Jacobson stars as the lead character Katie, an aspiring queer filmmaker who gets caught up in the fight to save the world with her family.
