World Leaders Condemn Russian Attack On Ukraine Calling For ‘Heavy Sanctions’

After weeks of watching Russian forces amass at Ukraine’s borders on three sides, Russia has launched an invasion of the neighboring country with attacks in several major Ukraine cities including Kyiv, the nation’s capitol.

More from CNBC:

The attack on Ukraine is taking place both on the ground and by air, with reports that Russian forces have breached the Kyiv region. Explosions have also been heard in the cities of Odessa, Kharkiv and Mariupol, and there are reports of fighting and fatalities in other parts of the country.

Officials said the offensive had already killed dozens of soldiers and several civilians as of Thursday afternoon.

Close followers of Russian politics believe Putin wants to destabilize Ukraine’s pro-Western government and to instead install a pro-Russia regime there.

U.S., Europe and Ukrainian officials have condemned the attack with Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, calling for “heavy sanctions” on Moscow.

According to the New York Times, President Biden has announced “the United States would cut off Russia’s largest banks and largest companies from the western financial markets and would restrict exports of technology to Russia, saying that would vastly degrade the country’s ability to thrive in the weeks, months and years ahead.”

Additionally, the U.S. is freezing trillions of dollars in Russian assets, including the funds controlled by Russian elites and their families, making them pay for what Mr. Biden called “a premeditated attack” against a free nation in Europe.

NBC News reports President Biden has been presented with additional options to disrupt Russia’s ongoing aggression including disrupting internet connectivity across Russia, shutting off electric power, and tampering with railroad switches to hamper Russia’s ability to resupply its forces.

According to the Associated Press, a presidential adviser says Ukraine has lost control of the Chernobyl nuclear site after Ukranian forces had waged a fierce battle with Russian troops.
