What To Watch: Riveting Drama “I Don’t Know Who You Are”

What to watch this weekend? I highly recommend I Don’t Know Who You Are a taut drama that follows Benjamin (Mark Clennon), a gay immigrant working class musician, over the course of one weekend as he struggles to obtain access to expensive preventative HIV medication after being sexually assaulted by a stranger. As a freelance worker without health insurance, the drugs that Benjamin need to avoid HIV infection after his assault are costly and financially beyond his means. Pushed to his limits while trying to scrape together the funds for his treatment before time runs out, we follow Benjamin as he is forced to reach out to friends and acquaintances for help. I Don’t Know Who You Are is a stellar feature film debut for writer/director M.H. Murray who has created an intimate, focused drama brimming with understated scenes where quiet often speaks louder than words. Rather than soak his audience in sorrow, he delivers a moving film about trust. This is reportedly Mark Clennon’s first-ever film role, but you’d never know it. Serving up layers of subtlety, shame, and vulnerability, his performance is lean and artful. Prior to release, the film was an official selection at several prominent film festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, Glasgow Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival, and the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival. The critics praised I Don’t Know Who You Are and the film currently has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. • “Deeply affecting…a pressurized city symphony” – Toronto Star • “Top 10 of the year!
