What To Watch: Revry Serves Up Two Classic Movies This Weekend

What to watch this weekend? Revry, the world’s first global queer TV streaming network, is offering up two oh-so-classic films centering on gay characters this weekend.

First up, Tony Award-winning actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein re-creates his role as the unsinkable Arnold Beckoff in the 1988 film adaptation of the smash Broadway play, Torch Song Trilogy.

A very personal story that is both funny and poignant, the films chronicles a New Yorker’s search for love, respect and tradition in a world that seems not especially made for him.

In this day when drag queens are being vilified in the name of political points, Torch Song Trilogy puts a touching, heartfelt face to one of those men ‘behind the makeup.’

Harvey and the film were both nominated for honors by the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Streaming Saturday, April 15th at 8pm ET/5pm PT.

And that will be immediately followed by Julie Andrews, Robert Preston, and James Garner in the glorious 1982 movie musical, Victor/Victoria. Here’s the synopsis:

Victoria Grant (Julie Andrews), a down-and-out British soprano, struggles to find work in the nightclubs of 1930s Paris.

While trying to scam a free meal, Grant meets cabaret performer Toddy (Robert Preston), who comes up with an idea that changes everything – acting as her manager, Toddy bills Grant as a male female impersonator.

When the nightclubs eat it up, the duo makes it big — even a Chicago mobster (James Garner) is enamored with Grant. But keeping the truth a secret is no easy task.

The film received 7 Academy Award nominations including nods for Andrews and Preston. Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse won for “Best Original Song.”

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 97% based on 33 reviews. Todd McCarthy of Variety called it “sparkling, ultra-sophisticated entertainment from Blake Edwards.
