Trump: Too Many People Are Getting SNAP Benefits ‘Automatically’

Donald Trump took aim at the nation’s largest food assistance program Monday night, telling Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that too many people are getting SNAP benefits “automatically.”

His comments come as the White House faces legal pressure over whether it must fund the program fully during the ongoing government shutdown.

“People keep talking about SNAP, but SNAP is supposed to be if you are down and out,” Trump said. “The number is many times what it should be. It’s disgraceful.”

He also claimed the program’s cost had ballooned from “7 billion to many times 7 billion,” though he didn’t say when.

But the reality doesn’t quite match his words. SNAP—better known as food stamps—has strict limits.

Recipients must earn less than about $34,000 a year for a family of four and hold few financial assets. Adults without children can only receive benefits for three months unless they meet work requirements.

Nearly 80% of those on SNAP live in households with kids, elderly adults, or people with disabilities. And far from skyrocketing, spending has actually dropped—from $128 billion at the pandemic’s height in 2021 to roughly $100 billion last year.

So while Trump paints SNAP as bloated, the data tell a leaner story.

The Donald also declared that people are quitting their jobs to get food assistance. That is NOT a thing that happens.
