Donald Trump is not only planning to once again ban transgender people from joining the U.S. military, but according to reports he also plans to kick out the 15,000+ trans military members who are currently serving. When Trump first banned trans people from the military in 2017, trans people already in the military were allowed to continue in their service. But The Independent reports Trump’s transition team is working on a plan to “medically discharge” current trans military service members which would deem them “unfit to serve.”

The U.S. military is having a tough time in regards to recruitment and Trump’s plans would only exacerbate the issue impacting military readiness at a time when recruiting remains a struggle. According to an anonymous source who spoke to The Times: “These people will be forced out at a time when the military can’t recruit enough people. Only the Marine Corps is hitting its numbers for recruitment and some people who will be affected are in very senior positions.” President Joe Biden signed an executive order within days of taking office in January 2021 directing the Department of Defense to scrap Trump’s discriminatory policy, which was announced by the Donald via tweet in 2017 without any consultation with military leaders.
