Donald Trump has abruptly fired Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden in a two-sentence email. No reason was given for her abrupt dismissal. The email from Deputy Director of Presidential Personnel Trent Morse: “Carla, On behalf of President Donald J. Trump, I am writing to inform you that your position as the Librarian of Congress is terminated effective immediately. Thank you for your service.”
More from Axios:
Hayden won praise for her focus on saving photos and documents about people of color, but had faced criticism from conservatives, accusing her of promoting children’s books with “radical” content.
The Trump administration has dismissed federal workers and purged government websites about communities of color following several of the president’s executive orders.
The orders follow the administration’s reinterpretations of Civil Rights-era laws to focus on “anti-white racism” rather than discrimination against people of color.
Confirmed by the Senate to the job in 2016, Hayden was the first woman and the first African American to be librarian of Congress. The position of Librarian of Congress is so apolitical that only 14 people have held the role since 1802. Responding to the firing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Hayden of “putting inappropriate books in the library for children.” But as many have pointed out, the Library of Congress is not frequented by minors. You have to be at least 16-years-old to become a member.
Inappropriate books for children? Ms. Leavitt does not know that you have to be at least 16 to use the Library of Congress. And you can’t wander the shelves or check books out. https://t.co/Zknx9hjkpp
