RIP to Tony Geary, 78. He was Luke on “General Hospital,” so was 1/2 of the soaps’ greatest-EVER couple (in spite of the bonkers storyline that brought them together). Survived by his husband. pic.twitter.com/3f2WP6jZEP

“It was a shock for me and our families and our friends,” Geary’s husband, Claudio Gama, told TV Insider. “For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”
Geary’s early career consisted mostly of guest roles including an early episode of All in the Family as a gay man who challenged Archie Bunker’s homophobia. Other guest spots included The Streets of San Francisco, Room 222, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Partridge Family, Barnaby Jones, and Starsky & Hutch.
Geary shot to international fame playing Luke Spencer on General Hospital, a role he originated on the soap opera in 1978.
Paired with Genie Francis’s Laura, the duo became daytime drama’s biggest super-couple. Their 1981 wedding was watched by 30 million people, the most-watched episode in soap opera history. Geary left the series in 2015.
Geary holds the distinction of winning a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
