Throwback Thursday: Kerry Ellis ‘Defying Gravity’

With all the attention on the upcoming musical film Wicked: For Good landing in theaters this month, I took a trip down memory lane on YouTube of some of my favorite “Elphabas” and was once again enthralled by this performance of “Defying Gravity” by the fabulous Kerry Ellis.

I’ve followed Kerry’s career ever since she became the first UK actress to play “Elphaba” in the West End replacing Tony Award winner Idina Menzel.

She was so successful in the role the powers that be brought her to the Broadway company (where she wowed audiences again) after her run in London.

Not only does Kerry possess a spectacular voice, but how she uses her gifts is what really sets her apart from so many. Her musicianship, her phrasing, and her laser-like dedication to the lyrics make her the top-shelf artist she is.

This performance is from the July 2021 concert event Best of the West End at Royal Albert Hall. Most performers who attempt “Defying Gravity” in concert get lost in ‘voice land.’ But watch how Kerry makes every lyric count. And her phrasing – pure gold.

After years of enjoying her performances on YouTube I got the chance to see her perform live a couple of years ago on an Atlantis Cruise. And she did not disappoint. I attended both of her concerts on the cruise back-to-back.

Afterwards, hubby Michael and I met her and quickly became fast friends. Totally down to earth, uber-easy to chat with, and – of course – a longtime LGBTQ ally . Five stars all around.

Another YouTube highlight – Kerry performing “Anthem” from the musical CHESS at the 2010 Remembrance Festival with QUEEN legend Brian May (with whom she collaborated many times). I love how she throws in a couple of alternate high notes with ease without losing focus of the lyrics.

Kerry has also enjoyed success in the world of pop music as well. Check out the title track for her 2023 studio album Kings & Queens. She fittingly used this as her opening number on the Atlantis Cruise 😉

She wears her royalty well.
