The Latest On Pete Hegseth And SignalGate II

The chaos behind Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth keeps on keeping on. Here’s a recap of the latest news regarding Hegseth sending sensitive information about an attack on Yemen last month to a second Signal group. The chat group was created by Hegseth himself (on his personal phone) and included his wife, brother, and lawyer, according to four people with knowledge of the chat. • At the White House Easter egg roll event, Hegseth was predictably combative when asked about the reports of a second Signal chat. You’ll note the one thing Hegseth has yet to do is deny he sent the info to his wife, brother, et al.

• Trump threw his support behind Hegseth saying he has full confidence in his defense secretary (“He’s doing a great job”) and that any concern over Hegseth’s decision to share military attack plans in a Signal group chat was a “waste of time.” • White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended Hegseth to Fox News saying, “This is what happens when the entire Pentagon is working against you.” The Defense Department’s rapid-response account on X amplified her statement with the word “ENTIRE” in all-caps.

• Former Defense Department spokesperson John Ullyot resigned and then published an opinion piece calling the past month at the Pentagon a “full-blown meltdown” of infighting. He added, “It’s hard to see Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth remaining in his role for much longer.”

EXCLUSIVE: A former top Pentagon official warns dysfunction could topple Hegseth — describing a department collapsing from backstabbing and constant missteps.

• Rep. Don Bacon, a prominent Republican on the House Armed Services Committee and a former Air Force general, became the first sitting GOP lawmaker to suggest Trump should fire Hegseth — calling the chaos at the Pentagon one reason why many Hill Republicans were privately uneasy with the Defense secretary’s nomination in the first place.

• And finally, NPR is reporting the White House has begun the process of looking for a new leader at the Pentagon to replace Hegseth.
