Over at his excellent site, The Caftan Chronicles, Tim Murphy has a terrific interview with out Tony Award winner (M. Butterfly) and Law & Order star BD Wong. https://youtu.be/Esb33rvV-U4?si=eH2ZKslFAfwibzDj In the chat, Wong shares on a wide range of topics including his longtime insomnia (I totally relate), co-parenting his son with his ex, how fatherhood has helped shape him as a person, and more.
You’re a different kind of grown-up when you have a kid. It’s very hard to be a gay parents and have your cake and eat it, too. You can’t really go out at night. You’re more in a 24-7 mode where you’re taking care of this person—now, of course, that’s not totally true, you still have babysitters and grandparents, but you still have this ongoing responsibility.
On how he snacks through the night and sleeps in to mitigate his insomnia:
“The mystery of my insomnia is a real problem. I can’t figure it out. I get up every night, go downstairs, have a snack—a bowl of cereal, a piece of corn bread, a rib, a piece of chocolate. I might do it up to three times a night, trying to manage the volume of what I eat. I think I get a cumulative six hours of sleep on a good day, but I don’t feel like that’s enough. I seem to sleep quite well between 7 a.m. and noon, so I let myself do that.”
On how he hates “basic” questions from interviewers:
“I appreciate people not asking basic questions that are available on the Internet—answering the same questions over and over again. You see big superstars dealing with this with such grace, which I marvel at. I can’t believe it. I am so insanely irritated by anything that feels redundant or lazy. Like, “What is the difference between TV and film? Between stage and film?” You can look that up! You can ask anybody about that! It’s not interesting.”
Wong also touches on how freeing it was, after playing a “generic procedural actor” on Law & Order: SVU for 11 years, to playing a character with a romantic life on Akwafina’s Nora From Queens TV show. https://youtu.be/wAYwOjwg7Oo?si=LvAN5Syo1p72ZqIw The whole interview is a really terrific read. I highly recommend. I previously shared Tim’s in-depth chat with adult entertainment legend Tom Chase here. https://twitter.com/TimMurphyNYC/status/1546509035897344002
