Team USA Wins First Men’s Hockey Gold Since 1980

Team USA won Olympic gold in men’s ice hockey, defeating Canada in the gold-medal game of the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.

The last men’s U.S. hockey team to win gold was 46 years ago with the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” crew.

From NPR:

In the end, the Americans won 2-1 on an overtime goal by forward Jack Hughes, after a heroic performance by goaltender Connor Hellebuyck in regulation kept the Americans’ dreams alive.

Hellebuyck ended the game with 41 saves compared to only 28 total shots on goal by his teammates.

Sunday’s gold medal is only the third all-time for the U.S. Canada leaves with the silver medal, its fifth all-time.

In 1980, Olympic men’s hockey was still an amateur event, and the team was assembled from college hockey players and recent grads. The U.S. stunned the Soviet Union 4-3 and won gold two days later against Finland.

NHL players returned to Olympic men’s hockey this year for the first time since 2014.

The final medal count: Team USA won a total of 33 medals (12 gold) at this Winter Olympic Games – the most since 2014.
