Out Music: Ty Herndon “Fighter”

Out country star Ty Herndon shares the music video for his new single, “Fighter,” from his album House On Fire with this warning via Facebook:

WARNING- The version of this video contains strong and disturbing images. I wanted to share this version of the video #FIGHTER with you guys. We did this powerful imagery for my performance The Trevor Project Trevor Live. Some of you may find it disturbing. I know i certainly did. Most of you know me as a country singer. I am also a man who believes in the power of love not hate. And I often sing about it. When I was first approached about using these images, I rejected it. Then after much thought and prayer I realized that this is the truth for many young LGBTQ youth in the world today. I see it often when I travel around making appearances for organizations like GLAAD Human Rights Campaign LA Pride Dallas Pride ChicagoPride.com & so many more. It is my greatest prayer that we can all stand together and love one another- No matter what color or shape our spots are. I know this one fact clearly- from my own journey- None of us are perfect. As my Maw Maw use to say, We are all just beautiful messes. So be strong and journey on with a big open heart – And pay it forward with grace- knowledge and love. Just a reminder that all proceeds from the download of this song go towards The Trevor Project.

GLAAD & Interscope Records Release “Hands – A Song For Orlando”

GLAAD and Interscope Records today released “Hands,” a musical tribute to the victims of Orlando, featuring Mary J Blige, Jason Derulo, Tyler Glenn, Selena Gomez, Halsey, Ty Herndon, Imagine Dragons, Juanes, Adam Lambert, Mary Lambert, Jennifer Lopez, the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, Kacey Musgraves, MNEK, Alex Newell, P!nk, Prince Royce, Nate Ruess, RuPaul, Troye Sivan, Jussie Smollett, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, and Meghan Trainor.

Proceeds from the sale of the new tribute single in the United States will benefit Equality Florida Pulse Victims Fund, the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida, and GLAAD.

“Orlando’s broken hearts have been lifted by the outpouring of love and support from people near and far,” said Equality Florida Executive Director Nadine Smith. “There has been beauty in the midst of our grief and we are grateful to these talented artists, producers, and GLAAD for helping us mourn and laugh and cry and sing together.”

“The horrific attack on the LGBT community in Orlando has left us devastated, but not defeated,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “As we continue to mourn the crushing loss of 49 Americans, the majority of whom were Latino and whose lives were lost to hate, we stand resolved in paying tribute to their memory, supporting the victims and families, and working together to achieve full acceptance once and for all.”

“This senseless tragedy is a call to all of us to stand together and face down hatred, intolerance and violence…and having grown up a short drive from Orlando, it really brings it right to my doorstep,” commented John Janick, Chairman and CEO of Interscope Geffen A&M. “We all know music has the power to heal, and I’m honored and grateful to be a part of whatever our business can do to help.”

Out Country Star Ty Herndon Makes First Public Appearance With Beau At TrevorLIVE

Walking the red carpet at the TrevorLIVE benefit in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium, recently out country star Ty Herndon appeared for the first time in public with his beau, Matt Collum.

The annual event marked 16 years of life-saving work by The Trevor Project, which provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning teens and young adults. It also marked the first time Herndon made a public appearance with the man who has been his partner since 2008.

“So many times in my life and career I’ve had to do these things alone, and leave the person I love at home sitting on the couch because I wasn’t brave enough to bring him and I wasn’t out,” Herndon emotionally tells The Advocate. “So this is monumental for both of us tonight.”

Herndon helped LGBT visibility in country music take a monumental leap forward when he revealed he is a gay man in a November interview with Entertainment Tonight. The 52-year-old singer says he immediately received support from several country music artists, including LeAnn Rimes — who recently spoke to GLAAD about why she’s proud to be an LGBT ally.

“When I watched him come out on TV, I texted him right away and said, ‘I’m the proudest son of a bitch there is,'” says Herndon’s partner, Collum. “I was, and still am. I am so proud of this man.”

Newly Out Ty Herndon Comes To Las Vegas

With No. 1 hits like “What Mattered Most” and “Living in a Moment,” country singer Ty Herndon is set to perform several of his classic hits as well as several new songs from his new upcoming album at The Cheyenne Saloon (aka The Adrenaline Sports Bar & Grill) tonight in Las Vegas.

Ty is in the middle of his first concert dates since publicly coming out last month, and I’m sure he’d love to see his Las Vegas fans to come join him.

Out Country Star Ty Herndon: “Like The Weight Of The World’s Been Lifted Off My Shoulders”

Just a week after coming out to the world, country music star Ty Herndon says he’s overwhelmed by the reactions and support he’s received – including from celebrities like Ricky Martin, Kristin Chenoweth, Lance Bass and LeAnn Rimes.

“My life feels open,” the artist, 52, tells PEOPLE. “It feels free, like the weight of the world’s been lifted off my shoulders.”

Since he shared the news of his sexuality with the world he’s had two public appearances, both of which were overwhelmingly positive.

Currently touring with friends Jamie O’Neal and Andy Griggs, Herndon says he had no idea what to expect from the audience of his sold-out show in Robinson, Illinois, on Saturday.

“We always circle up and pray before every show, but I think the prayer circle lasted a little longer with this one,” Herndon, 52, says. “They gave me a standing ovation and were just amazing and loving and kind … I got very emotional.”

The second public appearance was at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville for The Charlie Daniels Band’s Christmas 4 Kids benefit concert.

“Walking out on that stage as an open, free, happy, godly gay man is not something I thought I’d see in my lifetime … We knew that history was being made up there, and it was humbling.”

Clearly he has a lot to celebrate this Thanksgiving. “What a Thanksgiving it is,” Herndon reflects. “I’m sure there’s some challenging days to come, but today I’m just gonna sit and take this in and know that I’m a much stronger and better person because of all the support and love.”

In an “exclusive” interview with People Magazine, country singer Ty Herndon announces “I’m an out, proud and happy gay man.”

The 51 year old singer says he probably knew he was gay when he was 10 and began the coming out process to close family and friends at 20.

From People:

“My mother probably knew I was gay before I did. I remember sitting down with her and having the conversation,” recalls Herndon, noting his career path in country worried her. But, ultimately, “she was more concerned about me having a happy life. You have to be able to do that in your own skin, and [my family] has seen me struggle with being gay my whole career.”

While his professional start was promising (he was earning steady airplay with hit singles including “What Mattered Most,” “Living in a Moment” and “It Must Be Love”), the singer hit some snags along the way – including an indecent exposure charge for allegedly exposing himself to a police officer in 1995 (the charge was later dropped in a plea bargain) and subsequent time in rehab for drug addiction.

“I have made a lot of mistakes in my life. They’ve been my mistakes, and I own them,” says Herndon. “I’ve done a lot of work around forgiveness with people that I’ve hurt and people I’ve not been honest with because of my sexuality.”

I remember the “exposure charge” from 1995. It happened in my hometown of Fort Worth, Texas.

Since then I’ve actually met the man who was Herndon’s boyfriend at the time. In an effort to save Herndon’s career, the bf told me he was shoved out the door and Herndon’s team wouldn’t allow him contact.  Sad chapter for many I’m sure.

Because of that, I’m a bit conflicted on hearing this news today. While I’m happy for Herndon that he’s reconciled his sexuality with himself, I’m aware of what he means when he says “I’ve done a lot of work around forgiveness with people I’ve hurt.”  But I’m reminded how staying in the closet – especially for public/professional concerns – injures so deeply.

Herndon admits he married not once but twice to women who knew he was gay. And says the biggest lie he’s ever told himself is “that I couldn’t be gay in country music.”

Open and honest is the way to live. Although, I do wish it had come sooner for Herndon.
