Top Ranked Djokovic Wouldn’t Have A Problem With An Out Pro Tennis Player

The top ranked male tennis player in the world, Novak Djokovic, says he would support the coming out of a male pro tennis player.

Outsports reports that after his round-robin win at the the ATP World Tour Finals in London earlier this month, Djokovic told reporters he would see a fellow player coming out as a “courageous move.”

Although there are several female professional tennis player both past and present, no professional male player has come out publicly at this time.

When asked what his reaction would be to a player coming out, the 14-time grand slam champion said, “I wouldn’t have anything against that, absolutely.”

“It’s everybody’s right to have sexual orientation as they desire, any kind of direction in life they desire,” he replied. “I respect it.”

The Serbian did acknowledge that while he doesn’t “see people differently if they come out like that,” he was quick to add that “certain parts of the world are not ready to accept that.”

He would know. His native country of Serbia has a troubled past when it comes to LGBTQ rights and protections.

Although Serbia has an openly gay Prime Minister, Ana Brnabić, the country offers no legal recognition for same-sex relationships and adoption by gay couples isn’t allowed.

In fact, it wasn’t until 1994 that the country reversed its laws making homosexuality illegal.

Djokovic, however, has a much more LGBTQ-friendly history.

Gay Star News points up an episode at the 2012 US Open when, during a practice session, a young boy asked the superstar to marry him.

With a warm smile, Djokovic laughed, shook the boy’s hand and actually invited him onto the court for a little practice.

And thanks, ND, for being a true champion.

Wimbledon Devolves Into Hysterics As Fan Dons White Skirt To Join Champions On Court

I’d been reading about this incident, but really glad I watched.

Just a really light-hearted moment at Wimbledon. Made me laugh out loud.

From TheWest.com.au:

In an episode which had the crowd and the players in hysterics, veteran champion Kim Clijsters made a point about the strict dress codes at Wimbledon which say players must wear all white – even down to their underwear.

But what happens when a punter is called on court for a few moments of hilarity? Well, rules are rules.

A spectator was pulled from the crowd during a women’s invitational doubles match and given the chance to try to return a serve from Clijsters, a four-time major champion.

In a nod to the All England Club’s clothing rules, Clijsters went over to the sideline and grabbed a white skirt for the man to put over his blue shorts. Because he had on a light green shirt, he also was given a white shirt to pull on.

The fun is effervescent. Watch below.

John McEnroe On Margaret Court/Lesbians In Tennis Kerfuffle: “Who Gives A F**K?”

Tennis’s legendary bad-boy and elder statesman, John McEnroe, brings a comedic touch to the Margaret Court “lesbians in tennis” debacle in this irreverent “who gives a “f**k?” take on the subject.

Via News.com.au:

In his satirical role as The Commissioner of Tennis on Eurosport, McEnroe said he was a “strong advocate of same-sex marriage”.

“I actually don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t give them the right to be as miserable as everyone else,” McEnroe said.

In the skit released on Saturday night in Paris, McEnroe said Court telling fans that “tennis is full of lesbians” prompted three thoughts to him.

“This is true and who gives a f**k? This is not true and who should give a f**k? This is half true and should we really give a f**k?”, he said.

“As for renaming the court that bears her name in Melbourne Park, the jury is still out.

“The self-appointed Commissioner of Tennis might have a viable solution: keep the name, and when same-sex marriage finally becomes legal in Australia, I will personally call my good friend Elton John to host the biggest same-sex mass wedding ceremony ever seen in the Margaret Court Arena.

“Margaret, that’s the kind of guy I am.”

Wrong & Strong: Ball Boy Face-Plants Into Stadium Wall At Barcelona Open

Tough day at the office for this ball boy at the Barcelona Open yesterday.

After catching two balls, he sped back to his position with a bit too much gusto, face-planting into the stadium wall.

In theater, I like to call this being “wrong and strong.” If you’re going to “oops,” do it with conviction.

Check the kid out, though. He smiles and shrugs it off like a pro.

Rafael Nadal goes out on Day One of Wimbledon 2013

Rafael Nadal loses in first round of 2013 Wimbledon Tennis Tournament

From Wimbledon.com: Wimbledon experienced a first on Monday as Rafael Nadal lost an opening-round match at a Grand Slam for the first time in his storied career, beaten by Steve Darcis of Belgium, ranked No.135 in the world.

Darcis took the match on No.1 Court by the throat from the start and never allowed Nadal to dominate any sector of the contest, winning 7-6(4), 7-6(8), 6-4 in two hours and 55 minutes.

The odds were surely stacked against Darcis. He had played at Wimbledon only three times before – and was a first-round loser a year ago. In 12 of his 18 previous Grand Slam appearances he had lost in the first round.

Darcis’s best performance at Wimbledon before Monday was to reach the second round in 2009.
