Arizona Republican changes position on “License to Discriminate” bill

“I don’t like the negative picture of Arizona, and I’m on board asking the governor to veto the bill.

“To say (the bill is) anti-gay is following the feeding frenzy,” I have friends that are gay and I wouldn’t do anything to hurt them. This is blown way out of proportion and it’s too bad.” – Arizona Republican Sen. Steve Pierce of Prescott changing course on his vote on “License to Discriminate” bill.

So first he votes FOR the bill.  Then, when he sees how real people feel about the discriminatory legislation, he’s against it.  But he still doesn’t see the harm in legalizing discrimination against gays and lesbians?

By the way, he’s running for governor.  Did I mention that?

Steve Kornacki talks with Arizona Rep. Chad Campbell on “License to Discriminate” bill

Steve Kornacki, sitting in for Rachel Maddow, explores Arizona’s history of unpopular legislation from the repeal and reinstitution of Martin Luther King Jr Day, to illegal immigration reforms to the anti-gay SB-1062 now awaiting the Governor’s signature.

Arizona State Rep. Chad Campbell then chats with Kornacki about the opposition to the new Arizona anti-gay bill that can now only be stopped by a veto.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton opposes “License to discriminate” bill

“It would put a national and international spotlight on Arizona in a way that’s uphelpful to our economy.  It’s the wrong direction to go.” – Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton regarding SB-1062 which would allow businesses and individuals in Arizona to refuse to serve LGBT patrons and certain other groups of people, if the refusal is rooted in religious faith

US Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona urges veto of “License to discriminate” bill

Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona tweeted his support for a veto of anti-gay SB-1062 which recently passed in the Arizona legislature.

The bill would allow individuals to discriminate against LGBT persons on the basis of “sincerely held religious beliefs.”

I’m hoping Gov. Jan Brewer is listening.

And I’m waiting for Sen. John McCain to chime in.

The bill is not only anti-gay, but it’s anti-business and sends a bad message to the world that “certain people” aren’t welcome in the state.

Arizona Gov. Brewer – Please veto LGBT discrimination

Jan Brewer, the governor of Arizona, had five days to either sign SB1062 into law (making LGBT discrimination legal), veto the bill or ignore it which would allow the legislation to become law.

The bill represents what is basically a “license to discriminate” against gays and lesbians in Arizona.

This is bad for the LGBT community. It is bad for Arizona. It’s bad for humanity.

Giving citizens the ability to hide behind “sincerely held beliefs” will affect more than the LGBT community.

Should an unwed mother-to-be see a doctor whose religion that preaches abstinence until marriage, that woman could be refused medical treatment legally.  Many other scenarios come into play in this ill-conceived piece of legislation.

You can call the governor’s office and let her know what you think.
