Queer Eye Fashion Guru’s Family Thought The Show Converted Straight Men To Gay

Queer Eye’s fashion guru, Tan France, revealed recently that his family originally refused to watch the ‘make better’ reality series because they thought it was a ‘gay conversion program.’

Speaking on fellow QE cast member Jonathan Van Ness’ Getting Curious podcast, the fashion expert explained the tensions Tan has had with his family since coming out.

His family didn’t approve of homosexuality and refused to attend his wedding 10 years ago. When he shared the happy news of his impending nuptials, his family didn’t even want to know his fiancé’s name.

Coming from a very religious Pakistani-Muslim family – he attended mosque every day from the time he was 4-years-old until he was 15 – Tan says coming out had a huge impact on his life.

“When I came out, I did feel somewhat relieved because I don’t think I’d have the life I would have now,” says the 35-year-old.

It was when Queer Eye was about to air that he informed them, “You’re going to see what my life is.”

But his mother and siblings didn’t initially watch the program thinking it about converting straight men to gay. “They thought I was going around the country and encouraging people to be homosexual,” shared Tan.

But once they began watching they said, “Oh my gosh, it’s so much better than we ever expected. You made us so proud. You’re just who you are”.

Tan now credits the series with helping to improve his relationship with his family. “Every time we Skype now, they ask about [husband] Robin,” says Tan. “For 10 years, they’ve literally never said his name.”

Chalk up one more success story for the ‘Fab 5.’

Season 2 of Queer Eye is now streaming on Netflix.

The ‘Fab 5’ are back! Starting today all 8 episodes of Season 2 of Netflix’s Queer Eye.

This season the ‘make better’ show expands its scope of ‘mentees’ including a transgender man named Skyler and a beloved church mama. Get the tissues cause I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Produced to observe the 50th anniversary of when homosexuality was decriminalized in the UK, Man In An Orange Shirt chronicles two love stories sixty years apart.

In the 1940s, lovers Michael (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) and Thomas (James McArdle), live under threat of jail if their affair is discovered, leading Michael to marry a woman, Flora (Joanna Vanderham).

Moving to the present, the second half of the two and a half hour movie reveals Flora (Vanessa Redgrave) as grandmother to a young gay man, Adam (Julian Morris), who is in the midst of his own sexual confusion.

TV Guide Magazine: “A powerful Masterpiece movie that bridges generations with its tale of repressed and forbidden affections.”

The Boston Globe: “I was afraid the message of “Man in an Orange Shirt” would be simplistic — being gay was hard then, but it’s easy now, look how far we’ve come, etc. But the film, strewn with symbols that carry from one story to the other, has other things in mind, and they make it distinctly moving.”

You can catch the film on PBS’s Masterpiece this Sunday. The DVD becomes available on June 19.

Loving The New ‘Queer Eye’ Theme Remix Featuring Betty Who

Earlier this year, Netflix brought the gay-tastic ‘make-better’ show Queer Eye back in a fabulous reboot celebrated by critics.

With warmth and humor (and lots of style), the series put a spotlight on social issues that focus on the LGBTQ community, but also issues of religion, racism, and police brutality.

The ‘Fab 5’ are back on June 15, but you don’t have to wait that long for new QE.

Series stars Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Bobby Berk and Karamo Brown teamed up to get down with Aussie electro-pop star Betty Who for a music video of the remixed “All Things,” the groovy theme song of hit Netflix series.

And it’s just a bit of boyband heaven. Hot, pure colors, high-fashion lighting; a beat to bop to; and Antoni in crop top after crop top after crop top.

ABC News Dives Into The Appeal Of Netflix’s “Queer Eye”

The men of ‘Queer Eye’

With the second season of the Netflix reboot of Queer Eye just around the corner, ABC News’ Nightline did a terrific deep dive last night into the “big” moments from season one that differentiates the new series from the original.

One thing that’s made clear in the interview with the ‘Fab 5’ is the name change was done – shifting from “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” to simply “Queer Eye” to make the show more inclusive. It’s not just men (or straight men for that matter) that the show features.

And with a focus on the heartfelt moments, the show is able to offset the impression that new clothes or a haircut can solve all your problems. It’s the touching, human elements that remain a touchstone for the series.

Season 2 Of Netflix’s ‘Queer Eye’ Premieres June 15

After a successful reboot of the Queer Eye brand on Netflix earlier this year, we don’t have to wait long for the arrival of Season 2 now scheduled to debut on the streaming service June 15.

The Fab 5 – Bobby Berk (interior design), Kamaro Brown (culture), Tan France (fashion), Antoni Porowski (food/wine), and Jonathan Van Ness (grooming) – will all be back to help America laugh, cry and just plain feel better.

A new cover story for Entertainment Weekly reveals 35-year-old Brit and fashion expert France, a Muslim who currently lives in Salt Lake City with his husband, almost didn’t take the gig. “I hadn’t seen any people like me on TV before, and I definitely didn’t want to be the first one. I didn’t want that responsibility on my head.”

The fears eventually subsided, and, he says, “I couldn’t be more grateful.”

For the first time, season 2 will feature a transgender man on the make-better show.

Van Ness says, “One of my closest friends is a trans man who is incredible. And a lot of my clients are trans women. So I am really hoping that we can do right by our trans brothers and sisters. [Skyler] is going through so much, so [it was important to be] gentle and respectful and not to be a queenie know-it-all dum-dum when you’re trying to be a loving person.”

One Of The ‘Queer Eye’ Guys Popped The Question

One of the Queer Eye guys popped the question last night and will soon be heading down what is certain to be a very styling aisle.

At a surprise birthday party in Los Angeles at sbe’s HYDE Sunset, Queer Eye’s culture expert Karamo Brown proposed to his partner of eight years, director Ian Jordan.

Dropping to one knee, Brown put a ring on it – a gorgeous David Yurman ring no less – with these words:

“You are the funniest man I know, the kindest man, my biggest cheerleader. All of these things I accomplish, is only because when I get home, I know that I have you. You made me feel like I could do anything and I just want you to know that I hope we can conquer the world together for the rest of our lives, Ian Lamont Jordan, will you marry me?”

Surrounding the happy couple were family members, Karamo‘s two sons, their closest friends, and his Queer Eye co-stars Tan France, Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness and Antoni Porowski.

Netflix Green Light’s Season 2 Of Queer Eye Reboot

Netflix has announced, thanks to much critical praise, the reboot of Queer Eye has been green lit for a second season.

All five of the new cast – Antoni Porowski (Food & Wine), Bobby Berk (Interior Design), Karamo Brown (Culture), Jonathan Van Ness (Grooming) and Tan France (Fashion) – will return in season 2.

Along with Queer Eye, four more series – The Toys That Made Us, Dope, Drug Lords and Nailed It! – were also renewed.

According to Netflix’s unscripted content chief Bela Bajaria fans can look forward to 8 new episodes of QE by the end of the year.

“These series are indicative of what we’re trying to accomplish for Netflix unscripted: working with world-class producers to create the best unscripted shows on television,” Bela Bajaria, vice president of content at Netflix, said. “These series elevate the genre with innovative takes on familiar formats. They deliver immersive and nuanced stories. They elicit so many emotions from viewers, from tears of laughter to tears of joy – and that’s just ‘Queer Eye.’”
