Edie Windsor meets President Obama at the White House

President Obama invited DOMA plaintiff Edie Windsor to the France State Dinner this week and took the time to chat with her privately as he thanked her again for her courage to bring her case to the Supreme Court last summer.

From the White House blog:

“The thanks expressed by the President that day have been echoed by millions of Americans, including thousands of legally married couples who can now live their lives with greater justice and dignity – thanks to heroes like Edie Windsor who have been willing to stand up and fight for equality under the law.”

Facts show President Obama has issued least number of executive orders in over 100 years

The latest talking point to emerge from the GOP congressional camp is that President Obama, through use of executive orders, is crowning himself “King Obama” and break the law by using this executive branch tool.

Rep. Randy Weber (R-Texas) called the president a “Socialistic dictator” and the “Kommandant-In-Chef.”

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) wants to “sue” the president for breaking the law.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) says that the president is trying to “write laws.”

But are executive orders “breaking the law?” Is this a “new” thing we’ve never seen before? And is President Obama issuing them more than other presidents in the past?

From Steve Benen at MSNBC:

The American Presidency Project keeps a running tally of executive orders by president, starting with George Washington. Literally every president (except Harrison, who died a month after his inauguration) has made use of this tool, some more than others.

Franklin Roosevelt was clearly the most ambitious president when it came to executive orders. And who’s the least? That would be Barack Obama, who issued 168 executive orders in his first five years.

All told, Obama has averaged fewer executive orders, per year, than any president in the last 117 years. His totals may yet grow – it’s tough to predict how many orders he’ll issue in his final three years – but at least for now, Republican criticisms about Obama’s excesses aren’t just wrong, they’re demonstrably ridiculous.

Wait a minute! So you mean to tell me that Presidents Reagan and both Bush presidents used the dreaded executive order MORE than President Obama?

Yeah.  They don’t mention that part, do they?

How to drive Republicans insane

U.S. stocks rose on Thursday, with Wall Street continuing its record-setting advance after data had fewer Americans than expected filing applications for jobless benefits last week, casting a positive light on the labor market.

So, since the GOP’s answer for everything is to “blame President Obama” – I’m assuming conservatives have to give him credit for a stock market that has hit record highs 50 times in one year….?

Remember kids, he’s supposed to be anti-business.

Worst Socialist ever… 🙂

President Obama to skip Olympic Games in Sochi, sends diverse delegation including openly gay athletes

President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have all declined to attend the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics, marking the first time since 2000 that the prez, First Lady, VP or a former prez won’t be involved.

The White House said Obama’s schedule will not permit him to attend the Games.

In his place, he is sending a delegation led by openly lesbian tennis champion Billie Jean King.

Via Queerty:

Among other world leaders not attending the Olympics this year are French President Francoise Hollande and German President Joachim Gauck.

In a statement, the White House claims Obama doesn’t have the time to travel to Sochi, but that the delegation ”represents the diversity that is the United States.” (Bolding is mine)

Openly gay two-time Olympic medalist in ice hockey Caitlin Cahow will also be a part of the delegation, as will former Olympic figure skater Brian Boitano.

USA Today is  calling this “the most significant delegation the United States has ever sent to an Olympic Games.”

“It’s a positive sign to see openly gay representatives in the delegation,” said Michael Cole-Schwartz, spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign

The delegation will also include former Homeland Security secretary and current University of California President Janet Napolitano; U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul; White House Deputy Chief of Staff Rob Nabors; Deputy Secretary of State William Burns; and speed skating Olympic medalists Bonnie Blair and Eric Heiden.
