For the first time in 27 years, the imminently watchable and always fantastic Lily Tomlin stars in a feature film – Grandma.
The film was screened on the final night of the Sundance Film Festival to excellent response (no surprise). Sony has purchased the distribution rights.
The cast of Grandma includes Sam Elliot, Marcia Gay Harden and Julia Garner as Lily’s granddaughter. The flick was written and directed by Academy Award nominee Paul Weitz (American Pie, About A Boy).
Deadline writes that the film is “a darkly funny and also touching film of one long day in the life of one very frayed family.”
One of our great national treasures, Tomlin’s work is always insightful, inspiring and razor-sharp.

Mashup of the best in film for the year 2014 edited by Nick Bosworth. Very cleverly done.

In the span of five minutes, editor Manuel Betancourt explores the diversity and progress (or not) gays have made on the big and small screens.
From the editor:
How are gay men depicted in mainstream culture? From flaming sissies to AIDS victims, from sex-crazed lotharios to queer villains, the tropes that have thus far characterized gay men on screen have been few though they’ve increasingly become more varied, showcasing the diversity in our community.
Showcasing scenes from Angels in America, The Normal Heart, In & Out, Brokeback Mountain, as well as older films like The Maltese Falcon and Rope, this supercut compiles a representative sample of the ways gay men have been portrayed on screen.

It’s almost strange to note that so far there has not been a Marvel super heroine with her own film. Even Wonder Woman has gotten the nod from DC Comics for a 2017 film by now.
Also of interest is the character – having gone through several incarnations – began comic book life as a male, but the title was recently handed over to Carol Danvers in the comic book series and that’s the version Marvel’s going with for the film.
For those not familiar, Danvers powers include flight, super strength, and the ability to shoot energy bursts from her hands.
See you at the movies!

What does it cost to buy an election? And who exactly is behind the money?
As Mitt Romney famously said “Corporations are people.” And here are those “people.”
CITIZEN KOCH investigates the impact of unlimited, anonymous spending by corporations and billionaires on the electoral process, featuring stories of life-long Republicans whose loyalty is tested when their families become collateral damage in the GOP fight to take organized labor out at the knees.
