Meet Dan Smith and Miki Velickovski, a couple of Aussie country cowboys who defy the cliches of both LGBT and rural cultures.
LGBTQ news and entertainment
Last night, at the 2014 Human Rights Campaign Gala, former President Bill Clinton spoke to a packed house of LGBT advocates and activists.
During the speech, Clinton addressed the 3,000 attendees – thanking them for the “poetry and prose” of LGBT activism that he said helped transform the country in regard to LGBT rights and acceptance.
From Politico:
The fired-up crowd attending the Human Rights Campaign’s national dinner at Washington D.C.’s cavernous convention center was particularly enthusiastic whenever he mentioned Hillary Clinton, a likely 2016 Democratic candidate.
The former president noted her support for gay rights during her time at State, when she said that “gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”
What if coming out “smart” was the same as coming out as gay today? Filmmakers Dawn Cobalt and Andrew Bryan Smith present this short film satire:
In our short film “Out Smart,” a teenage boy faces his parents’ shock and outrage when he “comes out.” He’s not gay, though. He’s smart!
We made the film as a tool to talk about coming out. “Out Smart” satirizes the most common objections made to those who come out LGBT.
We hope this unusual context makes these remarks seem as ridiculous and hurtful as they are.
We also hope the not-yet-out LGBT person might feel emboldened by that — and certainly less alone.
Nearly 50 chapters of PFLAG nationwide have screened “Out Smart,” from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Kauai, Hawaii, and Juneau, Alaska. Schools and churches, too. It’s won 6 awards and 8 nominations and appeared in two dozen film festivals around the world.
Don’t forget to wear purple today, kids, in honor of Spirit Day 2014!
Whether you are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or an LGBT ally – this is a great way to show your support for ending bullying.
Millions go purple on Spirit Day in a stand against bullying and to show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth. Observed annually since 2010, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, and public figures wear purple, which symbolizes ‘spirit’ on the rainbow flag.

Stephen Colbert covered the recent news regarding marriage equality last night highlighting the latest state to join the majority – Alaska.
“Gay marriage is legal in Alaska! Gay couples will have the right to celebrate the traditional Alaskan way – by having Bristol Palin cold-cock one of their guests.”
Colbert also covered the new attitude the Vatican seems to have about the gays.
In light of the recent SCOTUS decision not to review anti-gay marriage bans, Stephen Colbert has seen the future.
He sees GOP Speaker of the House John Boehner campaigning for gay Republican candidate Carl DeMaio; a majority of Americans living in marriage equality states, and anti-gay groups like NOM fighting the clear future.
And as such, here he shares with us, “The Gay Civil War.”
NYC Police have arrested three in connection to what is being called an anti-gay shooting in Brooklyn that took place Saturday morning.
From NBC New York:
According to police, the victim was dressed as a woman and walking down the street with two other men in Bushwick Saturday morning, when the three suspects approached them and began making anti-gay comments.
A dispute ensued and one of the men shot the victim in the buttocks.
Tavon Johnson, 17, and Cody Sigue, 22 were charged with third degree menacing as a hate crime. Matthew Smith, 21, was charged with first degree assault and was also charged in a separate shooting Friday night.
Media Matters Carlos Maza does an excellent job of debunking the top 5 myths regarding LGBT non-discrimination laws.
Those often-used talking points include:
• LGBT discrimination isn’t a real problem
• Non-discrimination laws create “special rights” for LGBT people
• Non-discrimination laws infringe on religious liberties
• Non-discrimination laws cause frivolous lawsuits
• Non-discrimintion laws let sexual predators sneak into women’s restrooms
Great job by Media Matters of getting the facts out there. Watch below:
