Minnesota Vikings Chris Kluwe defends Brendon Ayanbadejo against bigoted Maryland lawmaker

Minnesota Vikings Chris Kluwe

Minnesota Viking punter Chris Kluwe is an advocate for LGBT rights and marriage equality. He has recorded three radio ads for Minnesotans for Equality, the group fighting a November ballot that would constitutionally define marriage as opposite sex only.

Now, Kluwe has written an open letter to Maryland lawmaker Emmett C. Burns, who this week urged Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti to silence Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo from speaking his mind on gay rights.

Said Burns in his letter: “I am requesting that you take the necessary action, as a National Football League Owner, to inhibit such expressions from your employees and that he be ordered to cease and desist such injurious actions. I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing.”

Here’s the closing part of Kluwe’s letter, published in full on Deadspin:

I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won’t even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children.

You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?

In closing, I would like to say that I hope this letter, in some small way, causes you to reflect upon the magnitude of the colossal foot in mouth clusterf*ck you so brazenly unleashed on a man whose only crime was speaking out for something he believed in. Best of luck in the next election; I’m fairly certain you might need it.

Sincerely,
Chris Kluwe

P.S. I’ve also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your “I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing” and shove it in your close-minded, totally lacking in empathy piehole and choke on it. A**hole.

Read Kluwe’s full letter HERE.

Ayanbadejo says of Mr. Burns that he’d “have to thank him more than anything for bringing national attention to the issue,” USA Today reports.

Ayanbadejo expressed surprise that Burns was trying to remove someone’s free speech rights: “For somebody to try to take that away from me I was pretty surprised, from a politician especially. People get fired for saying the things that the delegate said. People lose their jobs for discrimination…I think that whoever voted for him has their right to vote for who they believe represents their values. And if he represents their values, he’s the best person for the job. If Obama represents the best values for the country, he deserves the job.”

Added Ayanbadejo: “Its an equality issue. I see the big picture.”

Film: Award-winning “Keep The Lights On”

Keep the Lights On, one of the year’s best LGBT-themed films, opens in several NY and LA-area theaters this weekend, with additional engagements being added around the country in the coming months.

The film follows the loving but dysfunctional relationship of an aspiring filmmaker and his meth-addicted boyfriend over the course of a decade.

Keep the Lights On chronicles an emotionally and sexually charged journey of two men in New York City through love, friendship, and addiction. Documentary filmmaker Erik (Thure Lindhardt) and closeted lawyer Paul (Zachary Booth, Damages) meet through a casual encounter, but soon find a deeper connection and become a couple.

Keep the Lights On premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year before moving on the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received the Teddy Award for best scripted feature film with an LGBT theme.

Record number of LGBT delegates at DNC 2012

The 2012 Democratic National Convention is already historic for the LGBT community for a variety of reasons:

  • For the first time ever, the party platform clearly calls for marriage equality.
  • There are 486 openly gay delegates making up 8% of the total delegates.
  • Three openly gay elected politicians will be speaking at some point in the convention.

“We’ve been an underrepresented demographic in politics for a long time,” said Jerame Davis of National Stonewall Democrats, a gay-rights affiliate of the party. “Finally seeing us appropriately represented is just a thrill.”

TV Networks ranked on LGBT Inclusiveness

GLAAD recently released it’s annual report that scores the inclusiveness of what was available last season in its annual report — the Network Responsibility Index.

From GLAAD: “The sixth annual GLAAD Network Responsibility Index (NRI) is an evaluation of the quantity and quality of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people during the 2011-2012 television season. GLAAD researched primetime programming on ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox, NBC and 10 cable networks from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. The report is intended to serve as a road map toward increasing fair, accurate, and inclusive LGBT media representations.”

None of the networks received an “Excellent” score, though Showtime came the closest with 46% of its original programming being LGBT-inclusive. GLAAD also tracked the cable networks that it said were viewed as consistently conservative — TLC and the History Channel. See how those two networks fared on page 6 and get a look at the major networks on the following pages.

Head over to GLAAD to check out the report.

Video: Watch “The New Normal” pilot online

The New Normal, a new sitcom about two gay men (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who decide to have a child through a surrogate mother, is available for viewing online before it’s network premiere September 11.

From the Advocate:

Rannells stars as Bryan and Justin Bartha plays David, a well-heeled gay couple preparing to have a child with the help of a sweet surrogate (Georgia King), despite the objections of her comically bigoted grandmother, played with great zest by Ellen Barkin.

The two gay dads scenario of the series not only taps into the cultural zeitgeist, it comes with an impeccable pedigree. It was conceived and developed by Emmy Award–winning hit-maker Ryan Murphy, on a long winning streak after Nip/Tuck, Glee, and American Horror Story, and Glee writer Allison Adler, and it costars The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s breakout star, NeNe Leakes, as the unrestrained assistant to Rannells’s character.

The sitcom has already come under fire from conservative groups such as One Million Moms due to its subject matter. In addition, Salt Lake City TV station KSL has announced it won’t air the series, calling the subject matter “inappropriate” for the Mormon Church–owned affiliate.

In a recent interview with The Advocate, Rannells expressed his hope that viewers will respond to the show’s timely message.

“Gay or straight, the family dynamic has very much changed based on who’s around to raise the kid,” he said. “Because of divorce or financial reasons there are all sorts of people who have to pitch in to help raise kids.”

Video: How To Be Gay In High School

Blogger David Levitz recently posted his video blog post “How To Be Gay In High School” which really made me smile.

He’s a smart, young guy who really seems to be paying attention to his journey through life. And, he does offer some very smart tips for folks who realize they are gay while still in high school.

Here are just a few:

• Don’t “crush on straight boys.  Having crushes on straight boys ends poorly for both parties.

• I’m glad Grindr didn’t exist when I was in high school.  I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with it but I definitely think people under the age of 18 should stay away from things like that.

• If there are no gay people around you, explore the YouTube community.  I think if you can get to know someone at the other end of the country and it’s available to you – that’s what’s great about our generation.

Watch the video.  I like this guy.  He’s open, authentic and honest.  Check out his other videos on YouTube here.

Australia: No To Homophobia campaign endorsed by Australian Football League rugby code

From the YouTube page: In an Australian-first, a new public campaign will combine TV ads, social media, online support resources and moving personal stories from people who have experienced harassment to challenge every single member of the community to say no to homophobia, transphobia and biphobia.

Two television ads, to be broadcast nationally over the next year, depict the most common everyday situations where people face harassment — at school, in sports, at work and in public spaces like cafes and on the street. They show people experiencing harassment and witnesses taking action to put a stop to the offensive behaviour. TV ads focusing on homophobic harassment have never been shown in Australia.

An online resource at www.notohomophobia.com.au helps people get informed, find support and take action by hosting all the relevant information, resources and contacts in one place.

10 Kids, 2 Dads – new series on Oprah Winfrey Network

10 Kids, 2 Dads, which airs tonight, August 18 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, takes viewers to a conservative town about 20 miles outside of Detroit, where gay couple Clint and Bryan are daddy and papa to 10 adopted sons from at-risk backgrounds.

When Clint and Bryan decided to start a family, they never dreamed that they’d end up with 10 kids. At equal turns funny and moving, this series follows a real-life Modern Family as they raise their adopted children in a chaotic, yet loving environment.

From light-hearted moments of painting the house or teaching the kids to drive, to heavier subjects like when one of the kids deals with bullying, this looks to be an honest and revealing look at family life in America.

Tune in for the premiere of 10 Kids, 2 Dads with back-to-back episodes Saturday, August 18th on OWN.

For more info on the show, click here.

I’m definitely watching this tonight.
