Pride: 45 Years Of Progress

As we celebrate LGBT Pride here in Las Vegas, it’s important to note that 2014 marks the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City which ostensibly began the modern gay rights movement.

In the early morning of June 28, 1969, members of the New York Police Department raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar located in Greenwich Village. Raids were not uncommon in the 1960s, but this time history would be made.

The gay men at the Stonewall were gathered in communal grief for the loss of gay icon Judy Garland. As the police intruded on the collective mourning, gays and drag queens realized they had had enough. Rising up, the raid turned to riot as the scene spilled out into the streets and purses swung in protest.

Arrests were made that night, but the anger and passions born that night were undeniable, and would never be buried again.

The next year, on June 28, 1970, the first Gay Pride march took place in New York City beginning on Christopher Street and ending 51 blocks north at Central Park.

Fast forward forty-five years:

At this writing, marriage equality is legal in 19 states and the District of Columbia.

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has come and gone. Now all Americans, gay or straight, can serve and defend the country they love.

President Obama, taking his presidential powers as far as he can, has signed an executive order banning workplace discrimination for LGBT employees of federal contractors.

The first Gay Pride events were, in great part, about visibility. Today, while there’s still work to do, I feel that our Pride Parades & Festivals are about celebrating.

Celebrating our progress, our achievements, and most importantly, celebrating US.

I’m very big on diversity.  And Pride is a great time to acknowledge the vast, wide-ranging clan that we are. From corporate button-down gay dads to drag queens; from soccer mom lesbians to leather queens; from bisexuals to transgender folks. We all make up the rich homo-goulash that is the LGBT community. And I think we need to pay credence to ourselves as a community.

Because, if we can’t honor ourselves as a diverse tribe, how do we expect the rest of the world to do so?

LGBT Pride is a time to celebrate that we are all skin tones, backgrounds, politics, professions, economic classes, flaws and foibles.

We are fabulous.

And as you shiny happy people dance into the light this Pride, stop and toss some invisible rainbow glitter in tribute to the drag queens and gays of the Stonewall riots of 45 years ago.

We stand today on their very broad shoulders.

Forward.

Las Vegas: Cast of “Michael Jackson ONE” gives sexy Vegas treatment to “A Place With No Name”

Dancers from the cast of  Michael Jackson ONE in Las Vegas celebrate the release of single number two – “A Place With No Name” – from Michael’s album XSCAPE.

With a nod to America’s “A Horse With No Name” and the official video for “A Place With No Name,” the gorgeous and creative cast takes you on a journey through the Nevada desert to the oasis that is Michael Jackson ONE.

Michael Jackson ONE, currently in long-term residence at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, is easily one of my favorite shows to hit the Strip.  With stunning choreography and lighting, the show utilizes Jackson’s music perfectly.

Be sure and catch a performance of the show on your next visit to Las Vegas; and pick up your copy of XSCAPE on iTunes or Amazon.

Las Vegas: Miracle Mile Shops give The Randy Report “Follow Friday” shout-out

What a cool way to celebrate the end of the week!

The fab Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood on the Las Vegas Strip included The Randy Report on their huge, swanky LED wall for #FollowFriday!

I’ve been getting notifications about new Twitter followers and was wondering why. I guess that happens when your name is ten feet high on one of the busiest boulevards in the world.

That really put a smile on my face 🙂

Happy Friday!

Olivia Newton-John meets “Olivia Newton-John”

Olivia Newton-John meets her Madame Tussauds doppelgänger in Las Vegas

Internationally-renowned singer-actress Olivia Newton-John was on hand in Las Vegas today to meet her brand new Madame Tussauds Hollywood wax figure just hours before taking the stage for her wildly-successful “Summer Nights” headlining show at the Flamingo Las Vegas.

In 1978, Olivia Newton-John’s co-starring role with John Travolta in Grease catapulted her into super-stardom and to date remains the most successful movie musical of all time.

Madame Tussauds Hollywood is celebrating the iconic film by welcoming Olivia Newton-John’s wax figure, outfitted as her Grease character “Sandy,” into their attraction.

Olivia Newton-John’s wax figure will be making a brief appearance at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas before heading to the Madame Tussauds Hollywood attraction on Aug. 10.

Olivia Newton-John “Summer Nights” at Flamingo Las Vegas is a musical journey through the iconic artist’s illustrious career featuring hits from her early years including “Have You Never Been Mellow,” “Let Me Be There,” “If You Love Me Let Me Know” and “I Honestly Love You,” as well some of her favorites from Grease, “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “You’re The One That I Want,” and of course, “Summer Nights.”

With more than 100 million albums sold, Olivia’s successes include four Grammys, numerous Country Music, American Music, Billboard and People’s Choice Awards, an Emmy Award, ten #1 hits and more than 15 top 10 singles. IKEA finally coming to Las Vegas

“Ready to assemble” furniture store IKEA is finally opening a store here in Las Vegas.

The new store will be located in southwest Las Vegas near Sunset Road and Durango Drive. IKEA Las Vegas is looking break ground in Spring 2015, and to open in the summer of 2016.

IKEA Las Vegas will create 1,000 construction jobs. Upon completion, the store will employ 300 workers. The location will be 351,000 square feet and located on 26 acres.

IKEA has 38 stores nationwide, but Vegas folks have had to drive to 250 miles to Covina, California, to get their ready to assemble furniture.

I have to say, although many deride some of the furniture that has be assembled, when I furnished my townhouse in Los Angeles I bought almost all the furniture from IKEA. And the big difference, because I’m terrible at putting things together – we hired independent pros who know how to put it all together quickly and with the right tools. Best move I ever made.

It turns out that when the person doing the assembling knows what they are doing, the furniture is very sturdy and long lasting 🙂
