Jonathan Groff in OUT Magazine

Jonanthan Groff is a busy man.  Currently shooting his TV series “Boss” with Kelsey Grammer and starring in the play RED in Los Angeles opposite Alfred Molina, it’s hard to catch up to him.

But OUT Magazine managed not only that but a photo shoot, too.

In the interview, Groff shares his addiction to Diet Coke and googling himself – both of which he says he’s sworn off.  And, he discusses how coming out was never a big deal for him.

Groff, however, has long been transparent about his sexuality. He came out early in his career at a march for gay rights in Washington, D.C., when a reporter asked him why he was there. “I just told her,” he says. “I sort of always knew, in the back of my mind, that when the moment arrived for me to come out, I would. I wasn’t yanked out of the closet.” Groff was singled out, along with Sean Hayes, in a much criticized 2010 Newsweek article questioning the merits of gay actors playing straight, but his nonchalance on the subject points to a grounded, what-of-it mentality.

“When I came out, people said it may have a negative effect on my career, and that’s definitely something I thought about before I did it,” he admits. “But I don’t hold that belief. I just go on my auditions and plug away as I normally would. At the end of my career, I can look back and ask, ‘Well, did it, or didn’t it?’ But at the moment, I just have to move forward and hope that people will follow my actions.”

Groff also discusses his dilemma of shooting “Boss” in Chicago but having to watch what he eats, meaning no Chicago deep-dish pizza: “I mean, the show is on STARZ, so I definitely get naked at some point.”

Boss’s second season premieres August 17.

RED runs through September 9 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

Jonathan Groff returns to GLEE

Jonathan Groff is bringing Jesse St. James back to Glee later this season, but there’s a twist — and a juicy one at that: The student has now become the teacher!

At an event celebrating the show’s 300th musical performance on Wednesday, exec producer Ryan Murphy revealed that Groff will appear in multiple episodes as the coach of New Directions’ rival choir Vocal Adrenaline.

Murphy added that Glee Project runner-up Alex Newell would ” have many scenes” with Groff.

Jonathan Groff of GLEE fame returns to the NY stage

MCC Theater today announced that Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening, “Glee”), Will Rogers (When the Rain Stops Falling), Eddie Kaye Thomas (American Pie, HBO’s “How to Make It in America”), and Rutina Wesley (“True Blood,” The Vertical Hour) will star in the world premiere production of The Submission, by Jeff Talbott, directed by Tony Award-Winner Walter Bobbie (School for Lies, Chicago). Performances begin at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street, NYC) on September 8, 2011 and continue through October 22, 2011. An official opening is set for September 26, 2011.

Shaleeha G’ntamobi’s stirring new play about an alcoholic black mother and her card sharp son trying to get out of the projects has just been accepted into the nation’s preeminent theater festival. Trouble is, Shaleeha G’ntamobi doesn’t exist, except in the imagination of wannabe-playwright Danny Larsen (Groff), who created her as a kind of affirmative-action nom-de-plume. But a nom-de-guerre may prove more useful as the lies pile up, shaky alliances are forged, and everyone dear to Danny must decide whether or not to run for cover as the whole thing threatens to blow up in his lily white face. New York-based actor Jeff Talbott makes an auspicious play-writing debut with The Submission after taking home the first-ever Laurents/Hatcher Award for the play earlier this year.

Broadway’s Jonathan Groff to Return to GLEE

Jonathan Groff will return in the three final episodes of the Fox musical-comedy Glee. The 26-year-old openly gay actor exited the show at the end of season one.

Groff’s Jesse St. James quit rival school glee club Vocal Adrenaline to join New Directors and date Broadway-bound diva Rachel Berry (played by Lea Michele). Rachel was heartbroken when it was revealed that he used her to infiltrate McKinley High’s glee club and report back to Vocal Adrenaline.

“He’s back to apologize to Rachel,” a source close to the show confided to TVLine.com’s Michael Ausiello, “and perhaps get her back.”
