Some news stories you might have missed: • Pink News: Dr. Allen Bergin, an influential Mormon therapist who advocated for conversion therapy for decades, has reversed his position and apologized for his harmful views after learning that his two sons and grandson are gay. • Edge Media: A candidate for the Washington State House of Representatives may face charges after ripping down a rainbow Pride flag flown by a church and then threatening witnesses to the act, telling them that “If it gets put back up, I will take it down.” • YouTube: How I haven’t done a full post about the oh-so-talented Ramin Karimloo (above) is beyond me. • Instinct Magazine: Poland’s President Andrzej Duda was sworn into his second term last week after his campaign described the LGBT rights movement as a dangerous “ideology,” and declared that LGBT folks “not people.” And so, LGBT people are now leaving the country. • Gay Star News: More from Poland as thousands of LGBT people and allies protested in Warsaw, Poland on Friday and Saturday – resulting in police brutality. Commentators say the events are a possible ‘Stonewall moment’ for Poland as people stood up to two years of mounting LGBT+ hate. • Cox Media: According to a report by the American Academy of Pediatrics, 97,078 children tested positive for the novel coronavirus between July 16 and July 30. As of July 30, 338,982 children tested positive for COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. • Instagram: Academy Award-winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) has been announced to star in a film about the life of famed counter-culture artist Andy Warhol. Leto broke the news on his Instagram account.

Jared Leto dedicates Oscar win to those fighting injustice for who they love

Last night, one of the first awards announced at the Academy Awards AND one of the best acceptance speeches of the night was by Jared Leto who won Best Supporting Actor for his role of HIV+ transgender woman named “Rayon” in Dallas Buyers Club.

Leto began  with acknowledgements to his mom and band mates, but what really touched hearts was his dedication to “the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS and to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love.”

Here’s Jared Leto’s full acceptance speech at the 2013 Oscars:

“Incredible. Ellen, I love you. To my fellow nominees, I’m so proud to share this journey with you. I’m in awe and have so much respect for you all. To the Academy, thank you.

“In 1971, Bossier City, Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged her kids to be creative, to work hard, and to do something special. That girl is my mother and she’s here tonight — and I just want to say, I love you, Mom. Thank you for teaching me to dream. To my brother, Shannon, the best big brother in the world, you’re a true artist. Thank you so much for sharing this insane and amazing adventure that is 30 Seconds to Mars, and for being my best friend. I love you. Thank you.

“To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like the Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to say we are here and as you struggle to… to make your dreams happen, to live the impossible… We’re thinking of you tonight.

“And this is, is incredibly special as well because there’s so many people that helped me get here. And I just want to say thank you to Focus Features, to Mick Sullivan, to Jim Toth, to Jason Weinberg, to Emma Ludbrook, to Kelly Adams, to the entire Dallas Buyers Club team. Matthew, I love. Jean-Marc.

Jared Leto wins Golden Globe Award for transgendered role

Tonight at the Golden Globe Awards, Jared Leto won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role as “Rayon” in the film DALLAS BUYERS CLUB.

Nice to see transgendered acceptance at the Golden Globes. Congrats Jared!

Gay-themed projects Behind the Candelabra and Dallas Buyers Club were among the 71st annual Golden Globes’ big winners. The two films took home major honors during the awards show co-hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

HBO’s Liberace biopic, a frontrunner, won Best Miniseries for TV Movie, and Michael Douglas won for Best Actor in Miniseries or TV Movie.

Dallas Buyers Club‘s Matthew McConaughey won Best Lead Actor (Drama).

Behind the scenes: “Take it or leave it” scene from DALLAS BUYERS CLUB
