Former U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton formally kicked off her 2016 campaign for president with a speech before thousands on NYC’s Roosevelt Island.
Just a few lines that got major response from the crowd:
“I may not be the youngest candidate in this race, but I will be the youngest WOMAN President in American history!”
“We Americans are at our best when we pick each other up and we have each other’s back.”
“Americans are problem-solvers… We don’t run from change, we harness the power of change.”
“In America, every family should feel like they belong. So we should offer hard-working, law-abiding immigrant families a path to citizenship. Not second-class status.”
“And, we should ban discrimination against LGBT Americans and their families so they can live, learn, marry, and work just like everybody else.”
Speaking of the Republican candidates:
“They want to put immigrants, who work hard and pay taxes, at risk of deportation, and they turn their backs on gay people who love each other.”
And this light-hearted line:
“You won’t see my hair go grey in the White House. I’ve been coloring it FOR YEARS.”

Speaking in Texas today, Democratic contender for president Hillary Clinton said registering to vote should be automatic at age 18, unless folks choose to opt-out.

Hillary Clinton in a speech on Thursday called for universal, automatic voter registration, saying every citizen in the country should be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18, unless they opt-out.
Clinton spoke at Texas Southern University in Houston, where she was receiving the Barbara Jordan Public-Private Leadership Award. She also said Republican-led efforts in several states to further regulate voting and voter registration disproportionately harm both underrepresented communities and young people.
Clinton also called for a national standard that would require every state in the country to offer at least 20 days of early in-person voting, including keeping polling stations open on weekends and evenings.
I completely agree on both the automatic voter registration AND on the opt-out. But it should be something that 18 year olds have to consciously do one way or the other.
The more people who vote, the better.
Hillary Clinton online store now offers a campaign t-shirt quoting Hillary’s terrific speech at the United Nation in honor of 2011 International Human Rights Day, where she declared “being LGBT does not make you less human….[G]ay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”
Good on Hillary for reminding the world that she’s believed in LGBT rights for a long time.

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will use a voting rights speech at Texas Southern University to call for early voting periods in every state of at least 20 days.

Clinton also plans to criticize what Democrats call Republican efforts to restrict voting — especially for African Americans and Latinos — through devices like voter identification laws.
“This is, I think, a moment when we should be expanding the franchise,” Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta tells The Washington Post. “What we see in state after state is this effort by conservatives to restrict the right to vote.”
Personally, I’m very supportive of the idea of more early voting days. Shorter time frames mean less folks are involved in the democratic process.
Plus, should there be some problem at the polls, it might give voters a chance to go address the issue and come back to vote.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will launch a campaign Thursday becoming the first challenger to Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination for president.
A member of the U.S. Senate since 2007, Sanders will be a liberal challenge to Clinton, who he sees as being too soft on Wall Street. He describes himself as a “democratic socialist.”
Sanders has been an outspoken critic of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a trade deal the Obama administration is negotiating with 11 Pacific countries. Sanders is also a critic of the controversial Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which struck down corporate campaign contribution limits. Sanders has tried to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the decision.
While Clinton is heavily favored over Sanders, the Vermont senator’s entry in the race will provide a platform for Democrats to criticize Clinton from the left. Sanders’ presence could also highlight a divide between progressive and moderate Democrats.
Before assuming office in the Senate in 2007, Sanders represented Vermont in the U.S. House for 16 years. He is the longest serving independent member of Congress.
According to HuffPost Pollster, which aggregates publicly available polling data, Sanders trails Clinton by 55.1 percentage points. He also trails Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Vice President Joe Biden.
