Ellen Degeneres honored with Mark Twain Award

Ellen DeGeneres honored with the Mark Twain Prize for humor

Last night at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center, Ellen DeGeneres was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for humor.

MetroWeekly’s Randy Shulman and the Washington Post were on hand and spoke with DeGeneres as well as Lily Tomlin, Sean Hayes, John Leguizamo,Jane Lynch, Steve Harvey, Jimmy Kimmel, and Kristin Chenoweth about her career and her legacy.

The WaPo writes:

As her friends made clear Monday night at the Twain ceremony, DeGeneres has played splendidly across the media gamut. She’s been an awards show host (trifecta: Grammys, Emmys, Oscars), a sitcom star (two bore her name), a voice actor (”Finding Nemo”), a commercial shill (American Express, JC Penney, and on and on) and an advocate for various causes. She was even a judge on “American Idol.”

DeGeneres probably deserves a Twain award just for one legendary quip. While hosting the Emmy Awards just after the terrorist attacks of 2001, she asked, “What would bug the Taliban more than seeing a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews?”

For all the talk of equal rights, DeGeneres is just the fourth woman to receive the Twain Prize in its 15 years, following Whoopi Goldberg, Tomlin and Tina Fey.

Shirtless Maksim Chmerkovkiy of DWTS on ELLEN

Shirtless (and almost naked) Maksim Chmerkovkiy, of Dancing With the Stars, on The Ellen Show to raise money for breast cancer research.

Maksim wore Ellen briefs and waited as Ellen and Betheny Frankel threw balls at a target to unleash water on on the buff dancer.

All for a good cause – and visual.

Maks was a great sport. Enjoy!

Ellen surprises dismissed Boy Scout on the air

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player According to Mercury News, Ryan Andresen, who turned 18 on Monday, was due to receive the highest honor in Boy Scouting until he came out as gay. His mother, Karen Andresen, started a Change.org petition on Tuesday, Oct. 2, demanding that Ryan receive his Eagle Scout ranking. The petition has received more than 355,000 signatures.

Ryan was officially dismissed as a member of the Boy Scouts of America two days after his mother filed the petition.

Boy Scout leadership reaffirmed its ban on participation by gays and lesbians in July.

It’s also worth noting that Ryan’s Eagle Scout project is a 288-tile “Wall of Tolerance” on an outdoor wall at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School in Moraga, California.

Hopefully more attention being brought to stories like Ryan’s, will pressure the BSA to reevaluated their outdated homophobic policies.

Ellen DeGeneres made good on her promise to host Ryan on her show. As she says in the clip, she couldn’t give him his Eagle Scout pin, but she found a way to impact his life, just the same.

Clint Eastwood on ELLEN

Clinton Eastwood repeated his 2011 assertion that “I don’t give a f**k about who wants to get married to anybody else!” in a conversation with Ellen DeGeneres today, though in less colorful terms.

“Leave everybody alone,” says Eastwood.

The topic of his recent appearance at the 2012 GOP Convention comes up and he explains he’s more Libertarian than Republican these days.  “Leave everybody alone” seems to be his basic position.

Hate Group – One Million Moms – abandons JC Penney/Ellen boycott

Anti-gay hate group One Million Moms (which actually only numbers about 40K) was outraged that JC Penney would affiliate itself with a “high-profile homosexual entertainer” like Ellen DeGeneres, but its attempt to boycott the store has fizzled.

Director Monica Cooley believes “only time will tell,” because the group is now moving on to other issues that require its attention.

The group’s boycott of Toys ‘R’ Us over selling a recent issue of Archie Comics has also failed miserably. The Archie Comics issue they objected to because of its same-sex wedding sold out.
